I think the problem in England is you got fan-boys sitting in the VAR-room and being refs, and they just can´t be unbiased and professional. Either that or they are on the take, or both!
Ref's is a possessive noun, not a plurality.I think you'll find an apostrophe there is quite okay - it's denoting the omitted letters 'eree'.
