Management Tottenham Managers of the PL Era

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Gerry’s first season seemed really promising. Some good victories that season as well as the FA Cup run. Then it all fell apart - perhaps because the purse strings were tightened as Sugar positioned us as the ‘Woolworths’ of the PL as he put it.

:klinsmann:
My memory might be playing tricks, but I remember us on a decent run under Francis and it was around November or December, had a chance to go top of the league by beating Bolton. 2 nil up, we drew 2 2 in the end and never got up there again.

Again, I might be remembering it wrong, I will stand corrected if so.

Very much a Sunday-during-the-international-break type thread. How would you rank our managers from the PL era?

For me, it’s probably…

Conte
Poch
Redknapp
BMJ
Hoddle
Graham
Gerry
Mourinho
Ramos
Livermore/Clemence
Ossie
AVB
Gross
Timmy
NES
Santini

I think I’m being generous with AVB. Bale hid his total ineptitude which was badly found out after Gareth’s departure.

I’ve also been quite kind to GG but he did get a trophy and an FA Cup semi in the same season.
Top 4 looks right, I am just trying to forget the rest of them to be honest.

Looking at that list, I’m still pinching myself that Conte took the job. There are some scoundrels and chancers on there!

We would have gone second. I was at that game. Bolton were awful for us for many a year.

Feel like some are harsh on AVB. Yes Bale helped but you could also say AVB set us up well to let Bale flourish.
We were always going to struggle once he left.
Also Conte could leave tomorrow and he’d still easily be top three.

Poch
Harry
Conte
Jol
Graham

After that Christ it’s hard.

Rule out Pleat, Sherwood and Mason ( 🤪 )

Then it’s a case of ranking which turd stung least.

Francis managed to turn us into a club that worried about others teams.

Hoddle crippled by ENIC & self ego.

Jose just couldn’t refresh the team. Can’t wait for the whole story to emerge one day.

Ramos won a cup and embarrassed us elsewhere.

Doug and Ray / Ossie / El Tel (93) / worthy of nothing much in terms of comment.

AVB - better than many people may want to remember, but a car crash in the second season, and Bale…

Nuno. Basically as worthy as Mason.

Gross. Like it or not. Kept us up and that was his objective. And if only his number 2 had come along…maybe it would have worked. Sugar has the dead hand though so probably poor guy was fucked whatever.

Yeah, I didn’t have Pleat or Mason on the list - guess they were formally just caretakers? GG and Mou were maybe not dissimilar in that they were pragmatic hires, looked to be going well for a bit, and then went horribly, toxicily wrong… although both were fired before big games that could have changed the perception of their reign.

What I find depressing is how long that list is!!!

I'm only going by how much I enjoyed the football, so my personal top three are:
Poch
'Arry
BMJ
Although some of the games under Conte have been exciting, still think it's a bit early to judge.
All the rest of them - either 'meh' or a total disaster.

Agree with most of that but would have put NES bottom

Totally clueless but not his fault he was appointed

For me, the football under Harry was ridiculously good to watch at times. Poch brought us so close to glory and I’ll never forget the CL matches and bossing our rivals on a fairly regular basis. But Conte has done wonders in a short space of time and I’m hopelessly optimistic of better still to come!

Definitely agree with your last sentence:)

Just to add… I thought Shreeves managed us briefly in the PL era but it was the year before. Also turns out his real name in not Shreeves but Shreeve.

“My real name is Shreeve, but over the years I've had so many people getting it wrong that in the end I thought, 'why not – it's Shreeves.' I've looked in the club handbooks and I see that one year my name is spelt with an 's' at the end, the next it is 'Shreeve'.”

Amused me anyway.
