Has VAR Ruined Football?

That tennis example brings up one place where video technology really has helped, and that's in all the 'did the ball cross the line' situations. How many of those went down controversially in days gone by. That's probably the most important decision that can be automated, has a goal been scored or not. So it's not all been bad.

I think the use of video for subjective decisions can be helpful, and it is also helpful in determining whether a player is doing simulation.

But these cases where three heads are put together and they can't determine if a tug of hair is violent or if a head butt that'd have broken a nose if it succeeded as intended is violent... just farcical.

Obviously the last one has been stuck in my craw, that the player gets off the hook because he executed a violent action in an inept fashion, it's not judged to be "violent conduct"

I get what you’re saying; but I guess there will always be a degree of subjectivity when it comes to those sorts of situations; and imo it’s simpler if left to the on-field ref ( whose performance can always be confidentially reviewed, in private “ for training purposes “ if you will .

As I’ve said before; the offsite law should be simplified and then let technology do what it’s best at . Everyone would know where they stand .

Dunno what the solution is but what we've got now is fucking rubbish. Feel like we've got the worst of both worlds: refs second guessing themselves so games effectively get re-refereed with similar mistakes being made by the VAR, but also can't celebrate goals properly.

Personally I'd just fuck off VAR completely and use the money to have more refs on the field - didn't they do a thing where there were assistant refs behind the goals and that showed positive results?

Keep technology for offsides and goals, but beyond that purely refs on the field.

Sadly there's just no way FIFA will put the toothpaste back in the tube, though.

In all seriousness; VAR is a hostage to fortune as long as the current off/side laws apply .

I agree with Arsene Wenger ; it should come down to “ clear daylight “ between attacker and defender . All this nonsense about knees , wrists and half a finger ; simply plays into Stockley Park’s hands ; and give wannabe Obersturmbannführers far to much say
( albeit whilst paying them a shed -load of money) .

Clear daylight and a simplified machine operated system for delivering real-time decisions ; and our troubles would be over .

A simple binary decision; made ( at the speed of light ) by a machine before the goal is even scored .

And the bods at Stockley Park could go f\ck themselves.

How mad would that be .

Wee , your views . Perchance .
Clear daylight will negatively effect the way the game is played, ots a junk rule with the "benefit" of arguing if a computer got it right there was clear daylight or not.

Agree... A headbutt (or attempted headbutt) is and always WILL be a VIOLENT ACTION...
same as swinging a punch...
Whether it connects or not is irrelevant... The swing was made, the intention was violence...

Unless you're just swinging windmill arms at thin air, then you're either insane or fighting a wasp!

Going on our matches only, I have much more faith in Foreign refs/VAR in European matches than in PL. I am sure someone will come up with examples where that is not true but that is my feeling. Why is that? It could be that foreign officials are less biased against us or simply they have a better interpretation of what to do. Cannot recall long waits for decisions.
It's absolutely true.
Another solution I've long felt would work would be European ref swaps.
We have Italians, Italians have French etc.
Rotate it week to week, too.
Nobody should be reffing a home country.

4th officials are a waste of time…..

Possibly ; and I guess any criterion for being offside will have occasional hairsbredth situations.

I’m assuming that an actual gap ( however small ) would be easier for a machine to detect and it would be easier to show it to the audience; ie it’s either there or it isn’t.

It would get rid of the current “ small part of the strikers left earlobe “ - type decisions that take six minutes to adjudicate on .

It really would make defending all low block, it would completely change the game in ways that are not obviously apparent. Much like those who thought VAR would stop diving but if anything its encourages it in the area

Right. The ATTEMPT is violent, yet they let him off because his execution of the attempt was inept

How about you fuck off?

Re ; Your message.

Might you be free to appear as a speaker at the Oxford Union sometime during Michaelmas Term ?

It can be a “ tough crowd “ admittedly; but I think that you might do very well there .

( And neither the honorarium and/ or free post-debate slap up dinner are exactly
“ minimal “ ) . If you get me . 😉

Give it a think and get back to me in your own sweet time my dear friend.

( Fully appreciate you’ve almost certainly got a lot of other “ commitments “ ; but if you don’t ask etc)

If Spurs are shit in any game going forward, or the game is boring, our supporters should just continually chant; fuck VAR and the referee's a wanker.

What could we possibly have to lose?

:gallashmm:

Tottenham have the least penalties given with zero - Arsenil have 4
