Yeah, the squad building last summer was nonsensical. I dunno if Lange is incompetent, but my feeling is Levy thought he could recreate the birth of Poch’s squad, with a version 2.0.
Essentially that squad came about with adding some talented youngsters to the detritus of AVB’s squad, and letting go of experienced players not willing or able to go along with Poch’s methods.
There was simply not the quality in this squad the one in the detritus of the squad that Poch inherited. The likes of Lloris, Walker, Rose, Verts, Dembele, Eriksen are just light years ahead of most of our players.
The other thing that I think Levy didn’t factor in is the strength of the league. In 2015, La Liga, Serie A, the Bundesliga could still compete with the PL on fees and wages. Now lower level PL sides can take players away from Milan or Juve. The strength in depth of the league is huge. You need seasoned, high-performing players to compete.
