History When did you feel most connected to Tottenham?

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I came to the conclusion a while back that the most I’ve ever loved this club was as a child.

I didn’t go to games - maybe one a year. They weren’t on the tv all the time. Players like Perryman, Hoddle, Ardiles, Roberts clearly “loved the shirt”. And I just loved Spurs.

And the kicker. I had no real idea who the manager was*. On here the manager gets more attention than anything else.

More recent times Poch had me feeling real hope and pride, Harry had me on the edge of my seat with some great footballers. Jols adventures into Europe were great fun.

But now it’s all a bit meh. Sterile crowds. Client reference numbers and an influx of football tourists. Which I get is the modern game. I’ve worn that shoe and gone to Europe doing the same. Football is a form of entertainment.

So not sure if it’s just a combination of getting old and seen it all before.
Or if the love of the club is something most players just don’t have any more.
And most probably the managers don’t either.
And that feeds into your emotions as a fan.

Maybe I need a new hobby. I hear fly fishing by jR Hartley is a good read.

*(I realised as I got older and reading books etc that Nicholson and Burkinshaws love for the club infected the players. Think Jol and Poch both had a similar connection.)

Im thinking about foul voting you for not having a poll.
Very unTFCy

Once the ball & chain are locked onto your ankle and they throw the key away, that's it. Your stuck. Forever.

Decades have their own unique flavours, with all the Spursy ups & downs, but to be honest, the connection is still there, still strong and still permanent, whatever the fluctuations in our fortunes.

So it's hard to pinpoint an answer to the OP's question with any degree of honesty. Tottenham till I die, I think that's the saying.

Probably peak Redknapp. The team with VDV, Bale and Modric felt like peak individual entertainment. We were very fun but also pretty bloody effective.

But the team which finished 2nd to conte’s Chelsea is close .. that was a ridiculously physical, effective Spurs side.

Going to the stadium was magic when I was younger, even if it was only to see Gerry Francis era Spurs. Probably can't beat being young and the connection with the club, even if the team had seen better days. Redknapp with Bale, Luka, VdV and the last days of Ledley was pretty special too.

Poch teams were great, but the Redknapp era had a bit more magic to it in my opinion.

You miss being young it's as simple as that. I was a young boy who saw us lose the 1988 cup final win it in 91. Both of those felt part of my formative years then Wembley against Leicester city. But I was fully aware of the Crooks Archibald Hoddel pomp and we were GLAMOUR That shine dissipated then burnished again under Redknapp.

The modern fashion that talks up the Spurs DNA think it's simply attacking football it's not. Postecoglou football attacking though it is like Peps can be fucking boring. Side ways nick it back post tap in has zero flair. I miss flair players. I want Berbatov, Keane, Waddle, Hoddle, Modric, Rafa Bale. It's why I want Cuhna, Cherik. I think the modern team is tiresome. It lacks individuals who make me want to pay the ticket price. I'll not renew till we build sides in this image.
1987 FA Cup Final. In 1988, we went out of the FA Cup in the 4th Round to Port Vale. 1988 was the year of the Crazy Gang, Lawrie Sanchez and Dave Beasant.

‘ ball and chain locked onto your ankle … stuck forever “ ; Pah !

Being gently yet irresistably ( & whilst not being completely opposed to the idea ) ; tied by a silken cord at the wrists by ( and possibly to ) Catherine Deneuve in Belle du Jour would be a better way of describing it .

You chose to give in to her ( The Club’s ) enticements …so now you may never escape the bewildering , frustrating yet ecstatic voyage that she ( The Club ) has taken you on ever since you yielded to her
( The Club’s ) demand (s) for your devotion and unquestioning fealty .

There’s often a fine line ( but a whip-clear one ) between hope and anticipation and ecstasy or agony ; which , if translated inte Latin could be our alternative motto . When you come to think about it .

When we were running supporters club buses from Deal/Dover in 95-2010
My kids loved it, the team was shit but we had access to players every year for awards etc.
Taking 70/80 fans to each home game in family section 23A.

For the football? The 80s and Poch. But don't laugh when I say that my favourite times were in the 90s and early naughties when I was young and went regularly with mates. It was the laughs, the beer and the chanting even when we were shit that I look back on fondly. Then we all moved away, kids and work got in the way and it was never quite the same.

It's part of the reason I'm just not feeling it with the new stadium and probably never will. That and what the game's become (and that's a bigger issue than just Levy and Ange).
