Common sense....no shit it's important. What are we playing for cookies??

All over this place I see comments about how shit the Europa Conference league is and we should not waste our time in it.

So maybe it’s common sense to you.

But to others it’s not worth the hassle. Better to not even be in it.

So I guess playing for £s not honours. You can buy cookies with those £s if you want to.

Varied responses here but mostly positive about winning the 3rd tier European trophy.

I do feel that our fanbase is going to get a reality check soon. We are not going to be at the same level post Kane and Son.

Be crying out for the Europa league and conference league and any European football then.

For a long time the “Spurs need to win a trophy” seems to dominate here and in the wider media.

But now there is a chance we may enter the ECL again next season I see people disregarding it already.

Simple questions. Yes and no answers will do.

If we qualify for it is it important to you that we aim to win it?

Or would you prefer to finish 8th and not enter it at all?

It is important but we're a million miles away from doing so at the moment so I'm lowering my expectations for next season to:

Squad clearout (partial as I know it can't be done in one window - priority on defence/gk)
Clear club and tactical structure
Attacking football
European qualification

Obviously we should try to win every competition we enter...it's fucking professional football after all.

If were going to go for it (Europa or Conference) and take it seriously, then I want to be in all competitions.

If we're not, or the players just go into it half heartedly like they seem to have for almost all the cup competitions this season, then it almost seems like what's the point in even qualifying.

This group of players should be desperate for success, but for some reason or another, their performances in the cups, don't really reflect it.

Yeah I can understand lowering expectations.

The good thing about being in Europe is you can utilise a squad - I guess one upshot of not being in Europe is you could on paper have a smaller squad with less games to play. Easier to rebuild.

Winning a trophy is fun, I assume, but our impatience and greed for it has cost us a lot. Quite possibly, it has even cost us a trophy.

Things were going great under Poch until fans and the media started acting like we had to win something, that our squad deserved it. Poch went away from what worked, started being more "tactical" and pragmatic to be able to beat the best. Bought counter-attack players. Levy focused on retaining players rather than shrewd dealings, good sales and fresh blood in.

And then, when the consequences of impatient management started hitting us, instead of fixing it we cranked it up a notch. We fired the guy who had brought us to the top, and brought in "winners": Managers who are supposed to get short term success while shitting all over longer term progress and development.

And that is why we are where we are. We have wasted tons of money and years of what should have been great progress as a club, that should have been used to cement our place among the best in Europe. All because of people's unrealistic demands of instant gratification, success and trophies. We are not there. We were close. We should have continued doing what we were doing. We did not, and now we are far off.

We do not need a trophy. We need to build a sound foundation, based on attractive football that excites the players and the crowds.

Very much we should prioritise a trophy now, that is the whole point of existing as a football club. Sport is about winning not just existing as a tourist attraction. Personally speaking, endlessly hearing about the whole stadium and training ground thing is ten times more boring than hearing about a lack of trophies.

I kind of agree and disagree.

We've taken steps back this season, and we need to get back on track first. Only doing that will lead to a trophy (unless we fluke something).

Get a proper manager in, back him, clear the squad out, play attacking football. Ensure our academy teams play the same tactics as the first team.

The major caveat to all that of course is....the bald one

Yes but how many times have we been saying this over the last few years now? It seems that Daniel is incapable of hitting the reset button, he just keeps putting the same old scruffy and repetitive tape back in the recorder!

Yep!

If you see how easily Spurs fans were turned on Conte for playing boring football (first by a media agenda and then by results as well as poor performances), the only conclusion is that Trophies don’t really mean more than good football to Spurs fans.

And they are probably right.

Also, playing football and bringing in exciting young talent will probably get us closer to trophies anyway because the fans will be on board.

It’s not like there was any kind of way to measure that. We were never further away from trophies than when Conte was here. He had consistently decent league results but we were beyond shocking in the cups.

If it was a direct choice between silverware or good football (stupid choice anyway but hey) then i imagine most would choose silverware. Conte never got close to either so yeah..

Best start in Prem history is the foundations for a trophy. People were saying we were dark horse Prem contenders. Conte is a league specialist. His football is built to grind out results

People were loving it when we got 4th. Next to no complaints about the football. 2nd season was clear the wins would dry up - we were not performing well in underlying stats. Easy run of games masked bad performances.

Same with when we had that great run under Jose and were top. Fans were mostly riding a wave but underlying numbers sucked and we were never going to maintain it.

After the shocking opening day performance against Everton, we just about had something cooking there with Jose for a couple of months. Remember the 1-6 at Old Trafford?

Son running in behind Kane coming back to receive in midfield totally flummoxed the league for a minute there.

We had a one trick pony and when teams worked out how to nullify it we had nothing else. It also relied on being ridiculously clinical.

:kanehand:What great fans we have.

Atleast I can get some cookies.

I can happily live without trophies if we are playing decent football and winning enough games to have us duking it out for top 4 places. If we are doing that then getting to finals tends to happen anyway.
