Winning a trophy is fun, I assume, but our impatience and greed for it has cost us a lot. Quite possibly, it has even cost us a trophy.
Things were going great under Poch until fans and the media started acting like we had to win something, that our squad deserved it. Poch went away from what worked, started being more "tactical" and pragmatic to be able to beat the best. Bought counter-attack players. Levy focused on retaining players rather than shrewd dealings, good sales and fresh blood in.
And then, when the consequences of impatient management started hitting us, instead of fixing it we cranked it up a notch. We fired the guy who had brought us to the top, and brought in "winners": Managers who are supposed to get short term success while shitting all over longer term progress and development.
And that is why we are where we are. We have wasted tons of money and years of what should have been great progress as a club, that should have been used to cement our place among the best in Europe. All because of people's unrealistic demands of instant gratification, success and trophies. We are not there. We were close. We should have continued doing what we were doing. We did not, and now we are far off.
We do not need a trophy. We need to build a sound foundation, based on attractive football that excites the players and the crowds.
