Cole Palmer?

Isnt the whole narrative with him right now that basically hes underperforming massively?
Not playing terribly well atm, but he's an exciting, creative player. He's not a robotic efficiency merchant like a lot of his peers.

System doesn't matter when you put your head down and try to dribble in straight lines to no affect.
Xavi's penchant for dribbling into space is the best thing about him, and unlike your Lucas Moura's or Kudus' he typically knows where the blind alley ends. It ends in him diving for a foul a lot, but hey ho.

100%. We bemoan not having a Klinsmann, Berbatov, Kane now but i saw an old clip of Robbie Keane the other day and thought he'd not only be our best player by a country mile currently but probably one of the best in the premier league. That was only 15/20 years ago. The standards are through the floor. Its why those of us of a certain age find it all so mundane now.
I agree that the modern game is mundane but it's not because the players are worse now.

In your clip, Keane was playing against much worse players. They were also highlights.

Go check out some early Messi highlights and see some of the wing backs he was playing against. Absolutely nothing on the players today. The average player's fitness level today is miles above decades ago.

Unfortunately, the game has been so optimized to death by tactics and modern sports science that individual players can't stand out nearly as much anymore. The optimized "tactics" includes the bending of rules as far as possible. There is so much tactical fouling all over the pitch. There is no reward for being a better footballer and beating a man because you'll just be grabbed or hacked down and unless it's a blatant counterattack or you hit the imaginary limit of fouls the ref allows, you won't be booked. Especially if you are wearing specific kits.

Maybe a bit of chicken and egg here, or just seeing things differently

I saw him put his head down and dribble a lot - but mostly because Frank left him with absolutely fuck all else to do

Ive seen both Xavi and Tel play some wonderful passes when given the rare opportunity
I think he got fed up when the chips were down and tried to do it all himself. But he couldn't.
Remember how Bale used to just go mental and surge the whole pitch and score. Because he could.
We need to get that out of Xavi, he just can't. He's not 6ft 1 with legs to take him the distance in 5 strides.

Strangely, VdV is one of the few since Bale who actually can do that. Albeit with less control and guile I know.

Occasionally, but I'd rather he didn't tbh. Because when he get's it wrong, we need him at the back to defend the counter

He and Gray are our most talented and creative players..

He's had 2 good years at Chelsea, and also showed his talent for City before that by scoring in finals. He still has 9 goals in 20 games in the EPL this season which isn't a bad return for a player carrying an injury and in a poor team.

Yeah but we are talking about him being a 'star' in this league, he's fsr from that.
