Who Will be the Next Spurs Manager?

It's a tough job, but somebody's gotta do it

The decision of Daniel Levy to sack Spurs boss Jose Mourinho just days before the Carabao Cup final certainly raised eyebrows in the footballing world, particularly given the Portuguese manager’s reputation for lifting silverware.

However, it seemed inevitable that Mourinho’s tumultuous and dour reign would come to an end sooner rather than later, with fans increasingly concerned about their side’s inconsistency and apparent inability to play attractive football. Not least when compared to Leeds who just outclassed us 3-1 at Elland Road.

Now we’re living in the Twilight Zone, the question that remains, of course, is who will replace the Portuguese?

Here are the three favourites and a brief glimpse at their credentials for the role.

  1. Simone Inzaghi, 2/1

Several high-profile names have already been ruled out of contention for the Spurs job, including Ajax boss Erik ten Hag and the current Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers.

This has seen Lazio manager Simone Inzaghi (the younger brother of the more famous Filippo) become the bookmakers favourite for the role, with an average price of 2/1 currently being quoted.

Inzaghi has certainly enjoyed relative success in the Italian capital while also playing attractive football, landing the Coppa Italia in 2019 and the Supercoppa Italiana on two separate occasions. He’s also one of several Italian coaches to lead a revival of the classic 3-5-2 formation in recent times, while he has a win-rate of 53.85% across 247 games when managing Lazio.

However, Inzaghi’s Lazio are currently struggling in sixth place in Serie A after a challenging season, making it unlikely that they’ll earn Champions League football next season. This has cast a shadow over his potential appointment and may be a cause for alarm.

  1. Scott Parker, 4/1

Next up is former Spurs player Scott Parker, who made 63 appearances as a combative midfielder between 2011 and 2013.

More recently, Parker has earned huge plaudits for his work at Fulham, despite the Cottagers being on the brink of being relegated to the Championship after just one season back in the top-flight.

After all, Parker was pivotal to the club’s initial promotion in 2020, while his calm demeanour and insistence on a progressive and high-intensity style of play contrasts sharply with Mourinho’s overly combative approach and distinctly defensive footballing philosophy.

However, Parker clearly lacks the experience of managing a top-six club, with his relative lack of pedigree reflected by slightly longer average odds of 4/1.

  1. Graham Potter, 8/1

Interestingly, Brighton manager Graham Potter is currently third favourite to be offered the Spurs job, with the former Ostersund coach representing a similar type of candidate to Fulham’s Parker.

After all, his wealth of managerial experience has been garnered at relatively unfashionable clubs, while his Brighton side has yet to secure its Premier League status for next season with just three games to go in 2020/21.

While this seems to justify his average price of 8/1, Potter’s Brighton is a deceptively well-organised and disciplined side, while they continue to play attractive football and regularly dominate matches despite lacking a stellar playing cast. Unlike Parker, Potter has also been managing for more than a decade, recording an average win-rate of 44.2% over the course of 382 matches since 2011.

Ultimately, Potter may be a dark horse that offers the best value to punters, especially if Levy is in the market for a so-called “project” manager in the same vein of Mauricio Pochettino.
