You have got to be fucking kidding.

Good, I hope Brazil go out next and Colombia tomorrow.
Nope, I genuinely feel that way. I don't get a medal sent to me if my team win a competition, the point of all this as a viewer is to see them play great football matches against great opposition and be entertained, rather than praying for an easy uneventful run to a trophy that does nothing for me.

Well obviously the "big teams" should have turned up in the earlier matches then shouldn't they? Ultimately a team in the next round deserves to be there - otherwise they'd have been knocked out?

Who do you think is the best team in Germany's group then that deserved to go through?

Are you telling me that you really think Sweden would be a bigger worry for England should they play each other than if it was Germany? Or as much of a dramatic, exciting match to watch?

I mean sure I get the whole thing of real Englishmen hating the Germans and all that. But is there really any glory to watching big names going out meekly from a distance and hoping for an easy path through? Surely it's better to beat your biggest rivals on the way to the trophy as opposed to dodging them entirely. For me, winning trophies is not that interesting in and of itself, the real victory and joy in competition comes from battling (and possibly beating) the best on the biggest stage.
I feel kind of the same way about Spurs, I'd rather compete with the biggest clubs in the Champions League regardless of the outcome than to get a jammy run all the way to a domestic trophy.
Fuck that get us the easiest path to the final and the cup. History books won’t record this with and asterisk to denote Germany failed to make it out of the group stage

See that's quite arrogant - what's to say Sweden wouldn't knock us out in a brilliant game?

On this form I don't think many teams would have objected to getting Germany?

They made the same mistake as the Spanish after winning the world cup, they were too afraid to make big necessary changes in order to freshen things up and stay ahead. They kept things too similar and safe, and despite so many warnings and hints in the last couple of years, they kept believing that things will sort themselves out eventually and their quality would shine through once they are actually under competitive pressure. But it was just careless and a bit arrogant. They need to reset and rebuild this squad, a lot of older lot need to go and a new style established. But it will take time and wont be easy, just like it hasn't been for the Spanish.
Same thing with England after '66. except it went on for 50 years.

Sure, history books and all that, but what do you get out of it? The knowledge that long after you are dead and tangible memories of this tournament have completely faded from most people's minds, England can still boast about lifting the trophy in 2018 and no one will remember the context? Is that really what you want to get out of your personal experience of watching football? Personally, I can't say I do. I don't care about the history books, the world might be destroyed in a few years time and nobody living in that post apocalypse wasteland would give a damn about some trophy in a sport that doesn't exist anymore! What matters to me is right here and now, and I want to see the big countries going up against each other in epic blockbuster matches for my entertainment, it's really that simple.

No mate, it's realistic. Just imagine in your mind for a second, what would get people more hyped up and excited to watch in the quarter-final of the world cup, England v Sweden or England v Germany? Just imagine the last few seconds before the referee blows the whistle to kick-off and how different your heart rate would be. I know which one I'd rather watch.

You're getting way too deep here

You really are overthinking this one. The finals of recent years between "big teams" have been pretty boring.
