2018 FIFA WORLD CUP RUSSIA 14th June - 15th July

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Only competitive caps count. Saman Ghoddos has played friendlies for Sweden, but since he never got a competitive cap he could switch to Iran in time for the world cup.

Diego Costa was the same. Friendlies for Brazil but decided to represent Spain competitively
Needs to change - you play for a country you stay for that country

Otherwise you end up with the Qatari athletics team (or prob their football team for 4 years time)

Oh I agree. Once you've made a squad that should be it. I could still allow switching during youth levels but once you are at the age to be a full international it should be no changies except maybe in a very extreme case like when Kosovo got acknowledged as a country and could get a national team

Agreed. And I would go even further, once you play for a country even at the youth level (within reason, let's say 16 years old) you're stuck with that country. Look at Bentaleb. Born in Lille, France. Lived his entire childhood in France. Played for France's youth teams. But at the age of 18 he switched to Algeria, a country he had never lived in.

Under FIFA's rules if I had played soccer at a really high level, I would have been eligible for the Cuban or Swedish NTs despite having never even been to either country. It's just dumb.

> you will never sit next to Poch in his living room, cheering on England and getting a big bear hug from him if one of his 'boys' scores.

If you went down that road I don't know if Ireland could get a team together.
