Wimmer & Dav were never on the books at the same time and Davies (who was first choice at LB at the time due to DRs injury) had not played there yet.

Comparatively we were shorter and age was also more of an issue.

No because we sold Wimmer and signed Sanchez - but we still strengthened a position they really didn't need strengthening considering Dembele was injury prone and needed replacing. We had no true Kane back up and we had just sold Walker.

Any updates on outgoings?

Because correct me if I am wrong, but we need to sell foreign players if we wish to bring in any new ones. I think our quota is full.

Always gave his all when playing for Spurs in Pochs first season when with Mason Spurs cm position looked pretty good - even keeping Dembele on the subs bench or played at RW.

Quite happily get him back - aged 25 an play DM CM and AM with CL experience at Schalke, Club trained and still knows lots of players so not much integration time requured - would fit into Spurs quickly although not necessarily a big upgrade in any position.

If signing him allowed us to sell Sissoko ( now almost 30 so last chance of a event fee) or Lamela ( injury prone) or Wanyama we free up an Overseas Trained Player place in the squad - and that is necessary before we can sign any other overseas trained player ( which is 95% of names proposed in this thread)
Haven’t we just given Sissoko a new contract ? Hardly likely to sell I’d have thought.

Thomas lemar would be the most Tottenham signing ever. Buy where we’re completely stocked when our defence was a mess.

shades of 07 when we had a shocking backline and midfield but we bought Darren Bent to supplement Keane, berbatov and Defoe up front.

How long has Wanyama got on his contract?

Is he going to just run it down too. I know he rejected a transfer in the summer to Belgium. If we can't get rid of players as they are happy to just pick up a wage then we are fucked.

His contract ends in 2021 according to Transfermarkt.

There were talks of Hertha Berlin being interested before the window opened but since then nothing.

But Dembele had that chronic hip injury - even in peak season 16-17 he is only managed 57% of PL minutes. And Poch had stated in his book he saw Dier’s future as a CB not a CM. And it was obvious to many of us Dier did not have the physical or mental dexterity to play in a “Poch” midfield. And in three years with the first team he gave Onomah 20 assorted PL minutes as a winger. And in his first year with the first team he gave Winks about 3 games.

The midfield mess we’ve been in was visible a long way back, and is one of the major reasons Poch end up with the tin tac. Not seeing it was bad enough, his solution to it was worse.

I think the point he's making is that Sanchez wasn't that essential because we HAD Wimmer providing a 4th body, we sold him and signed Sanchez so he didn't really add any depth we didn't already have previously.

Kane & Walker...? Eh?

Each post is drifting further away from the gratuitous claim that I'm refuting:

We should have signed [a DM*] three years ago.

(*Note, not a #8, CB, RB or ST2)

At that point we looked suitably furnished in that position. The fact that Wanyama has since got broken and Dier's progression has dropped off a cliff is bad luck, not bad planning as at that time marker.

Should we have signed one in the last 12 months? Fuck yes.

In terms of #8s, we've signed 3 of them since then and depending on what one sees Winks as you can consider that 4 of them.

Was Poch reactive enough in more recent times? No, but his insistence on Winks & Sissoko, again, make this a different matter.

What do you suggest.....?

As CEs definders will eagerly remind us.... A player is perfectly within their rights to do so.

What do you mean?

16/17 was mentioned. Centre back was the LAST position we needed to strengthen off the back our most successful Premier League season where we had the best defensive record for a second year running with the best defensive duo in the league.

We had Toby and Vertonghen. We had Dier who pretty much played centre back all season and was part of that successful defensive record and we had Wimmer who as a fourth choice centre back always came in and performed relatively soundly. Not to mention the high hopes we had for CCV and Davies' capability.
