And once upon a time Spurs were often the ones who held the highest transfer record. Norman Giller recounts how Spurs in their heyday were similar to Utd and City in theirs.

Those days are long gone. We spend because we have to. Although the fact our record transfer hardly plays is pretty fucking ironic. And our defensive record transfer has been pretty underwhelming too.
And once upon a time Huddersfield won the league 3 years running.

Those days are long gone.

And Poch, who had been there 5 years ?

Did he make demands for a striker and was refused point blank in the summer, whilst signing other players ?
Whats Poch got to do with the article you posted? I was just stating that what Mourinho said in that article has nothing to do with Levy buying him his priorities because Mourinho's priority would clearly have been a target with his only other striker injured for the season.

But if you are just after my opinion anyway, Poch probably didnt demand a striker. Jose however needed one really badly in January instead of Bergwijn.

It's obvious to me both managers would have asked for a forward.
Indeed Poch did, and got Lorente while Jansen was still at the club.
Poch used Lorente quite a lot so I can only think he wanted someone better/ younger otherwise why let Lorente go when Poch wanted a forward(s) to cover Kane or work in tandem with Kane ( Madrid away).
Reading between the lines ,it has to be Levy that is at fault, he won't buy someone out of desperation and looks at every purchase as an investment but sometimes needs must. And I believe he didn't renew Lorente's contract just to save wages and then when we drew a blank in the summer he went back to Lorente but it was too late , he already had an agreement with Napoli.

I'm glad you agree.

some people think that football stopped in the sixties.

Hey times move on.

My local team regularly play against teams I watched spurs play in the 80s.
And as has been proven - by Spurs - spending the big(ger) bucks does not guarantee anything.

I’m more hopeful Troy comes good than us spending loads of money on one player who could flop. Or some very good scouting.

Because some people on here seem to think that Levy shafted Poch and Jose by refusing to buy a striker.

Glad to see you don't agree with that point if view.

I think I misunderstood your point.

Of course Mourinho can make a fuss. He’s just been given a multi year contract at £15m a year a few weeks before the window. It’s the very best time to make a fuss as there’s no way Levy can risk losing him. Imagine the fallout if Mourinho doesn’t get everything he wants? He walks a couple of months after getting the job, making us the punchline to every joke out there. No way Levy risks pissing him off
What kind of person does that? Someone has just employed you , paying you £15m a year and you start trouble at the first opportunity? How does that help Jose? His reputation would be completely fucked and would never get another job again.

You remind me of Championship manager when I was 15. I would keep giving my chairman ultimatums over and over again to release more money for wages and the fucker would never sack me.

And we’ve got a pretty tall targetman / striker. He just happens to be injured. Son would have filled in just nicely, but shit happens. Do you honestly think we should sign a world class striker and tell him he’s benched when Kane is fit? Or we tell Kane he’s now a sub?
So have you heard of the two strikers formations? We’re using a 4-4-2 mainly when defending.
But yes if we had a world class striker and he played better than Kane then yes, Kane would be fucking benched. Or does that ruin your little fantasy?

Jose wanted a striker but not a make weight or a stand in. He wanted quality. There were none of quality available, otherwise other clubs would of signed them.
No other top club went into the january window facing the prospect of having no senior striker available for the rest of the season, though.

And what do you mean there were none available? Are clubs supposed to advertise there wares in the local paper or something?

Qualty Striker for sale. 20 goals a season guarenteed. Good pedigree.
50million o.n.o

It's up to the buying club to be pro-active and go out there and force the fucking issue. Ffs.. It's how the transfer market has always worked.

Ah right.

So that's why Chelsea, United, Barca etc were able to sign a quality striker and we weren't.........Oh wait.

Piatek was available for one. We even have a "Have we signed Piatek yet?" thread. But during negotiations Levy went into hardcore Levy mode and demanded we take him on Loan instead of paying the £23.5million that Berlin ultimately ended up paying.

Probably because Levy saw future resale value in Bergwijn.

Are we seriously blaming Jose for our lack of striker options when he spent the whole month of january and every weekend since crying about it?

I'm not blaming Jose, I'm just making my point that with the amount of money given to management in the last 7-9 months to spend, why should Levy be getting it in the neck?

5th highest net spend in the world across the last two transfer windows John. Why didn't the guys with the need use that more efficiently?
