Transfers Summer 2020 Transfer Thread

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Turn that post round.

Aurier wanted out last summer, but agreed to stay. So not unreasonably he needs to go this summer with his contract having only 2 years to run. He was never staying.

JM wants an experienced RB to replace Aurier - and its lower risk to buy a PL experienced RB.

Who are the alternatives to Doherty ?

Spurs have swapped a 27 year old Aurier for a 28 year old Doherty - if rumoured fees are about right. Sure even better if the replacement is say 24 - but even fewer alternatives with tyhe right experience. Think he's better than the other options rumoured we were interested in.

Think Doherty is a very decent upgrade at no or minimal outlay - only slight compromise is age.

Anyone who has actually sat down and watched both players consistently knows which one is best and which you’d rather have in your team. I saw the wagon wheel the other day and the stats on this definitely lie. Ask every manager in the league and I bet nearly 20 out of 20 would want Doherty over Aurier.

Plus people need to get away with worrying about signing players with potential. That’s not where we are as a club right now. Now we have appointed Mourinho because we want to win, right now. Sure we might return to the previous model but at this moment in time we want ready made first xi players ready to make an impact. We’ve needed it for a while. Whilst we should still look at age, the players coming in need to hit the ground running this season from the first whistle. No project, just the here and now.

He played well in his only appearances at Chelsea. Then Jose benched him for no particular reason. KD said that he knew he wouldn’t play under Jose so he asked for a transfer ASAP.

I don’t care about scouts. When you have a player you coach every single day and you don’t play him and then he becomes world class somewhere else, you failed, and failed big time.

What worries me about Jose is his ego and mind games with players. Tanguy needs to play more to reach any sort of conclusion about him. To ship him off now could look monumentally stupid in a few years.
It’s not just Jose, tho...Poch seemed to have lost patience with him...Zidane is benching Bale (who has proved to be a gazillion times more consistent than Tanguy)...SAF binned of Beckham at his peak, as well as Pogba...Pep wouldn’t play Sancho....

This narrative of ‘Jose loses world class players’ is not specific to him, he is just more in the spotlight. No-one had an issue with it before he went to Utd and wasn’t winning every title going. (Also, I cant particularly remember the horror when he sold KDB, Salah, or even Robben). It’s driven by trying to sell papers /Sky subscriptions / clickbait from Utd...when the wheels are coming off (as they did for Van Gaal and Moyes, and will do for Ole) the media love nothing better than pinpointing errors (in hindsight, mind you, as it’s easier), and some people lap it up.

I would also argue the days of the superstar player are fairly recent - the obsession with having to nurture certain players with big egos is something that’s crept into the game over the past the years or so...I’m fairly sure most companies wouldn’t put up with whining employees who don’t work hard during the day or aren’t prepared to work so there’s that, too.

I know Hakimi’s gone now, but he was up for grabs. I'm not sure I buy that chose Inter over ManC and Bayern stuff.

Not all of them need replacing, and there is plenty of value out there. Winks 40m for Sangare 20m for example - we've upgraded and made 20m. Lamela and Bergwijn would fetch us what 40m ? We could buy Stengs or Eze + 20m. Dier, Foyth, Sissoko what 45-50m ? We could get Kessie for that and if we bought Eze buy someone like Todibo for 20m or less. Liverpool picked Tsimakis for 10m. There's value out there. Wijndal the LB at Alkmaar is valued at about 9m Eur.

I'm not bitching about us having limited funds, just what we are spending those limited funds on. Paying 16m for a 28yo Doherty is money down the toilet and barely an upgrade on Aurier IMO, 40m on Hakimi would be worth about 60-70m in two/three years time and an infinitely better player during that time.

Money being tight surely means we need to be even smarter with it, no?

One thing I can't disagree with you on is how dumb and unimaginative we are with our purchases and scouting. Its so reactionary it hurts.

Clearly you haven't taken your medication today. I suggest you take your Lithium, lie down and allow your BP to lower itself. Otherwise Spurs may lose a loyal supporter.

Which of us hadn't taken medications?
One is melting down about the fact that Spurs was not mentioned in gossip column where 98% is absolute bullcrap anyway, other was being over-the-top sarcastic about this melting...

But guess you don't have to take a dose today, as we were linked with Doherty ...

I get that Doherty doesnt get the pulses racing and age counts against him but if we're only signing one right back it had to be someone more experienced and preferably prem proven. We couldn't afford a total Ndombele style flop there and have to rely on Gedson/Tanganga over 60 games. There just arent many great right backs around at the moment and other players nentioned like Celik looked beyond ordinary. In an ideal world we'd add Aarons to rotate but if that happens it will be late in the window and only if we have the resources. I wouldnt want us buying too many more players 28 and over though and this is what has always concerned me with Mourinho.

The season starts before the window closes. I think, if it's not decided already, in the coming preseason games and in the first games of the season,Ndombele will get some gametime and be evaluated. If the effort isn't there he will be sold. So my guess is any Ndombele transfer action will be very late in the window.

Tin Foil Hat Time.......

Real are desperate to offload Bale. His salary prevents them signing another Galatico.

Barca leak stories of Messi wanting to leave. Clubs with interest in Bale prick their ears up and enquire about Messi. Carrot dangles, deadline day passes - Madrid stuck with Bale, Messi signs extended deal with Barca.

Messi has gone down the legal road to get out of his contract, that's some statement for a bluff. if it is a play its to get rid of the barca president that the seniority players hate.

Bringing Hojbjerg in to replace (probably) Sissoko as a CM is a definite good upgrade
Bringing in Doherty to replace Aurier is a definite upgrade (better attacker and fewer errors) and he's HG so created another overseas trained player space if Aurier leaves

So far a good window to improve 2 of our starting line up.

3rd GK is not likely to play that much but bringing Hart in (HG) rather than taking up the 3rd GK spot with an overseas trained player is a sensible smart move. Also allows Brandon Austin and Alfie Whiteman to develop on loan this season and maybe they could take the 3rd GK slot n another year or two.

I'd be more positive than you as we've upgraded 2 of the starting X1 so far.

I was just holding back some of my enthusiasm in case someone laughed at me.

Thoughts? Would you let him go if right amount came in?

He won't ever be the successor to Lloris, but in my eyes he doesn't have to be. He's good enough to be our 2nd/3rd choice and I'm ok with that. In addition, I think it won't be easy to find a better replacement for him, given the limited amount of money we would get for him.

Our priorities are elsewhere.
