We would lose that battle, I don't want him any way, it would feel like he's here under duress plus if the going gets tough, he'll get going to a bigger club.

Maybe. But we don’t know that. Just because he said Barca is a dream doesn’t mean he wouldn’t be good for us. I’d imagine most players in the world want to play for Barca. It’s not a big deal imo. As far as I’ve seen, he’s never had an attitude problem at Ajax and has been good for them for multiple seasons. Oh and it’s been reported he’s also a fan of Jose. Do we ignore that and just say we don’t want him because he said he’d like to play for Barca? Players say a lot things. Him saying he likes Barca doesn’t make us a second rate club or whatever people spin that type of comment into.

He is being linked with a move to Spurs by credible sources, not some people on TFC.
Ahhh credible sources that you think the club have gone to and pretended we are interested, so they leak the fake story, so that some fans on TFC think that Spurs want Van de Beek? Not Ronaldo, Van de Beek.
What an effort for a run of the mill, whatever kind of player.

Must be like the “fake“ Dybala story even though Dybala said his reps spoke to us?
Was the meeting also staged with Dybala in on it?
Or did the club speak to his reps, just so the story could be leaked to trick some people on TFC?

Definitely because Jose might not be here by the end of the season, we might not get top 4. I mean if we and Man U are really in the market for him and he chooses us then I'll be convinced.

Hmm I don’t know what to say to that.

Just a weird pessimistic way to view things.

Everything will go wrong down the road.....so we shouldn’t make a good signing now.

I don’t get it.

The point I'm making he's not a good signing for us if he's going to use us as a stepping stone.
Even if a player has an eye on Barca, but comes here first, a few things can happen. Not specifically talking about VDB here by the a way.

He can take us up a level, and help us win something for a few years before he moves on, or decide he likes here if we do end up winning stuff.

Yes he could also be a flop, or leave at his peak before we’ve achieved anything, but it isn’t a reason not to sign anyone.
It’s not like Eriksen playing shit to not get injured after some five years and looking for a way out, it’s a player signing a new contract at a new club, who wants to impress for a big move later down the line.

Well Berbatov helped us to win something but we suffered a lot as a result of him leaving, if we knew he was going to do that, would we have still bought him?

Ok sure but we don’t know he’s doing that. I think it’s unfair to completely judge his character or intentions based off a couple comments he made. Even if it plays out like you say.....If comes in and gives us 2-3 really good seasons then he’s already better than a lot of the signings we make.

If you don’t think he’s a good talent because of his talent then that’s a different story. But I don’t understand this fear of signing a player and then a big club coming to take him.

Would anyone forego the years we had Modric in midfield because in the end he left for Madrid? Same for Bale, but at left back of course?

So if a player says he wants to stay only for two years and we pay a big fee for him, we should still sign him?
It really all depends.
As I said, things can change. And if he signs a five year contract, it’s not really up to him.
Or we can fleece whoever wants him.

It’s all part of the game, I’m not sure you can avoid it.
We just signed an Woolwich fan, players do what’s best for them at any given moment in time.

If DeBruyne agreed to join but was adamant on just a one year rolling contract, would you say no thanks?
