I think what is more important is moving out the deadwood.

I honestly would almost prefer if they went with a younger, cheaper approach to rebuild the team than throwing around big money for older, mediocre players.

Obviously the best move would be buying top level, expensive young good players but that will never happen.

My concern is that no Europe allows Levy to do nothing and use no Europe as an excuse. CL or no CL shouldn’t impact us selling Sissoko, Aurier, Winks, Lamela, Moura, Dier, Sanchez but Levy likely uses it as a reason which is my concern.

However, if he is keeping Jose it could be a good thing if it prevents Jose from spending big money on the crap Jose would want.
This is the approach I prefer personally. Sell the players who are not good enough and use youth/cheaper options to replace that have the potential to grow.

Realistically Spurs can afford this type of window without Europe (numbers are from transfermarket then I took 5-8m off since I underrate our players)-

Sell (profit 99 million)
Sanchez - 20m
Dier - 15m
Sissoko - 12m
Winks - 15m
Davies - 12m
Aurier - 12m
Gazzaniga - 3m
CCV - free
Foyth - 10m

Buy - 2 CB's, RB, LB (if Reguilon leaves to Madrid), ST

GK -Lloris(34)/Whiteman(22)/Austin(22)
RB - Tanganga(22)/Doherty(29)
CB - Rodon(23)/Toby(32)/new CB/new CB (add a 3rd CB if big offer comes for Toby)
LB - Reguilon(24)/Sessegnon(21)/Cirkin(18)
DM - Hojbjerg(25)/Skipp(20)
CM - Ndombele(24)/Lo Celso(25)/Dele(25)/White/Devine(16)/Bowden(19)
RM - Bergwijn(23)/Lamela(29)/Lucas(28)
LM - Son(28)/Clarke(20)
ST - Kane(27)/Parrott(19)

Ideally, we add a younger, more attack-minded manager but that's a different discussion.

When Poch took charge of his first match at Spurs the squad included :

Lloris, Vorm, Walker, Rose, Davies, Vertonghen, Dembele, (Mason and Bentaleb - Poch's first season CM duo), Lamela, Dele and Kane, plus others.

Son arrived via his Agent as he was pissed off at his previous club not allowing him to compete at Asian Games (winning giving a life changing exemption from a 2 year Military Service obligation), which Spurs agreed to do, Whilst Alderweireld as Vertonghen's Belgian CB partner came as he was out of favour on Atletico Madrid bench or on loan).

Other than that most of the players bought after Poch demanded to be Manager (ie bigger input into transfers and youth development) after one season or he was off, have turned out not to be so good.

The list coming in over those 4 years include Sanchez, Sissoko, Moura, Aurier, Jannsen, Nkoudoo, N'Jie etc......a pretty meh list despite some of the fees paid........£47m our highest ever fee for Sanchez, £30m for Sissoko rather than buying Grealish, Maddison and Brooks for the same total money (but needing to develop them) etc. And giving new contracts to Sissoko and Lamela.

Sadly a re-run of Poch buying the likes of Osvaldo at both Espanyol and Southampton - and each club cancelling player contract for gross miss conduct. Poch's talents are as a coach, not at buying players

So a massive squad overhaul was inevitable even before Poch left, with pretty much none of the incomings over 4 years consistently making a great impression.

Ndombele, Lo Celso and Sessegnon cost £100m + in summer 2019

Summer 2020 we would probably have repeated buying that quality of player, however with covid we also needed to increase the size of squad to deal with increased match frequency so bought in 7 players - Hojbjerg, Reguilon and Rodon probably pass the quality test, with jury out on Bale still, Hart a decent free HG option, but Doherty has yet to show his Wolves form at Spurs. Sadly nobody wanted most of the players we wanted to offload.

So no surprise that in summer2021, we still need to rectify 4 years worth of bad buying by trying to offload the likes of Sanchez, Sissoko et al bought in those years .

So its not going to be easy as we have a full squad now - but arguably half of them we need to upgrade on over the next couple of years.

The only good news is that we have Skipp and Sessegnon coming back from loan to fill 2 positions. The bad news is that players such as Sissoko, Sanchez, Lamela, Moura, Aurier will be on high wages which other clubs may not wish to match so we may well need to subsidise the remaining years of their contracts.

So summer 2021, in practice given almost no clubs have money due to covid, I'm hoping to get 3 or 4 good players in plus Skipp and Sessegnon back, whilst I'd really like double that number in.......is Frank Aarnesen still around to give is 'Frankie's Funtime Fridays' with a new player announced once a week ?

Lovely recap, I totally agree!!

One small win from missing out from Europe is that (hopefully temporarily) we can trim down our squad a bit when we do not have midweek games anymore. So there can literally be fire-sale in the squad players department - I personally would like to see the back of Doherty, Sanchez, Sissoko, Moura, Lamela.

Add that to players leaving anyway - Bale & Vinicius
And loanees who will not have a path to main squad - Foyth, CCV, Gazzaniga

Bring back Skippy and Sess.
And add CB (x2); CM; ST/RW

And that would be 1st phase complete.
That would mean we would have Lloris+Hart+ Whiteman as GG ; Reggie+Sess+Davies as LB; Aurier+Tanganga RB; New CB1+New CB2+Rodon+Toby+Dier as CB; Hjojberg+Ndombele+Skipp+Lo Celso+ new CM + Winks as CM; Alli+Kane+Son+Bergwijn+ST/RW as attacking options. Total of 24 players; out of them 4 new + 2 loan retnrunees.

Then we should see how many of remaining players would cope - for example I'd let Skipp and New CM (Sarbitzer?) settle in nicely and then sell Winks; give more time to Rodon+ new CBs and then move on Alderweireld (+possibly Dier); let Sessegnon get used to 2nd option as LB and then move on Davies. Now we'd have to bring in new RB+Attacking player (without specified position right now)
That would be 2nd phase completed.

Total of 23 players; 3 sold ; 2 purchased.

Other people we should consider upgrading on are Aurier, Lloris, and Dier (by then last-pick utility player) but considering way more pressing issues I would not mention them before phase 3.

It is impossible to do all these changes at once unfortunately.
Bottom line is - we should have started it way earlier and should be like half way into it already.
This outline is on assumption that Kane, Son, Ndombele, Regulion and Hjojberg do not want to move during that time. Most likely some of them do, but cant factor that in really.

No idea don't watch him Five. Just saying what I've heard.
I'd trust your judgement more than random lads of twitter
If you like Eric Dier, you would love this guy. Maybe I am wrong, but I cannot for the life of me understand the hype around him. For me, he falls down in 3 key areas: 1. Rubbish with the ball at his feet; 2. Dozy; 3. Turns like a drunken sailor.

Also, one little thing to be wary of is that it seems to be Fonte who is the organiser in that Lille defence.

Now he has been, I believe, linked with Liverpool, and something like that is enough to make me question my own judgement.

Think we are broadly on the same page, just a question of how many players we can move on and who is available to bring in.

Not sure we will want to or be able to bring in 2 CB's next summer, starting from having Alderweireld, Dier, Sanchez, Rodon and Tanganga (5 now) - think its one or perhaps both of Dier and Sanchez out and one in this summer and Alderweireld leaving next summer. and Tanganga possibly covering both CB and RB next summer.

Aurier has one year left on contract and has refused to renew before so I think he needs to leave. and Doherty hasn't pulled up too many trees. So its likely we need a first team quality RB this summer. Just a chance that Eyoma (doing well at Lincoln on loan and before that E u17 WC winner and did well in pre-season 2018) now aged 21 or 20 year old Lavenier (now in EL squad) is good enough as back up RB.

So IMO more likely to be 1 x CB and 1 x RB in this summer - but just depends on availability.

One of the other issues is whether Lloris (contract ends 2022) wants to sign a short extension, or whether we need to look to replace him this summer.

So plenty of holes to possibly fill this summer - and summer 2022 !

How crucial is European football to our summer business?

Its better to be in europe both to attract new players, and in EL to give youngsters some minutes.

Being out of europe, we would not need as bigger squad - say 2 or 3 players less, so if we can get 3 or 4 quality players in and move on 6 or 7 players who we don't work it wouldn't be a disaster. But being out of europe for a couple of years might be a problem in retaining and recruiting players.

The one thing I really want is that we start recruiting based on the system. My main gripe with a lot of our player recruiting is that it feels that we are mainly going off of numbers or price tags. Which players that have the best ratings in certain isolated areas and such, without factoring in how they would fit into the managers system.

This summer we need to address this. Doesn't matter if the manager is Jose or someone else. We need to recruit players based on the needs of the managers system. This was why early Poch worked. We had Mitchell who knew what kind of players Poch would need and he got players that fit those roles. Then when Mitchell left and took his black box with him we went back to seemingly spinning a wheel or playing the lotto.

Find a manager, nail down a system, and get players in that will fit it. Our current squad is a weird Frankenstein of players where some suit a counter attacking system while some suit possession ball and some suit heavy press teams.

Nail down what type of team that we will be, and get players that fit that model instead of putting focus on spending big. Buying a 90 million player that doesn't fit the manager's system is 90 mil wasted.

Wouldn't complain. Had a bad moment with his feet this season but definitely a very good keeper. Watch Ramsdale this year and it's just night and day between them.

Acording to some media, Todo Fichajes, United have agreed a deal to sign Donnarumma on free this summer, which would see him the highest earning goalkeeper.

I wouldn’t mind Henderson, but if I’m remembering right he signed a new deal at the beginning of the season which would mean handing him stupid money to convince him of a move.

Todo Fichajes has been wrong in the past so let’s see about the Donnarumma deal

Which is why if we don't get europe levy has to still buy quality otherwise we'll drop out for a very long time

Who's the new upcoming Vertonghen :vertna:
Something our scouts are still trying to figure out incredibly.

On a real level though, what kind of club with any kind of aspirations and even semi competent management would allow players of the stature of Eriksen and Vertonghen leave without buying replacements?
I mean it genuinely does just beggar belief when you really think about it :mourcheeks:

I despise Dier so this doesn't feel me with confidence

I'd doubt that, isn't DDG contracted until 2023 and on something like 400k per week? Maybe I'm wrong but think he'll be their first choice next season.
