When Doherty signed for us, everyone on this forum was happy. With benefit of hindsight everything seems obvious.
I had watched Wolves quite a lot, and Doherty was fantastic at RWB. The issue was he's struggled a bit with the transition to RB.
I'd like to state that I wasn't and that I knew he had seriously limitations and wouldn't fit in here.

But I get the idea many fans were blindsighted by his stats which for me were 'false stats' as he got most of his G/A from set pieces or late runs into the box. Not something we are looking for from a RB.

For me it wasn't just stats, I saw him play for Wolves and he made really well timed runs into the box. It's not easy to have composure when in the final third, and Doherty had it time and time again when it counted for Wolves.
If you remember, I called for us to switch to 3-5-2 when Doherty signed, just so both Reguilon and him could get further forward. Most disagreed with me at the time, and so did Jose unfortunately. Your criticism of him as a RB are fair.

Doherty is a decent player. Just not best suited to the current system. And that can be said for a lot of the squad.

Our squad is in need of a rebuild not just when it comes to age and quality, but it is a disjointed squad that doesn't have a clear identity.

No matter if it is Jose still being here in the summer or another manager we need to build the squad based on the managers system.

Maybe but its clear to me our best system is a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-3-3 and I don't want to switch to a system just to play to an average players strengths

I want someone putting in good crosses, running up and down the flank from my RB not someone making late runs into the box tbh

We need to prioritise a left footed centre half this summer. We have lost the balance with Vertonghen gone.

Mings, Pau Torres, Romagnoli would all be good additons, although the latter is probably out of the question. Ake would have been ideal, but Man City aren't going to let him go.

Romagnoli is not completely out of the question. He seems to at least for now be out of the starting 11 at Milan in favour of Tomori (they do have a game tonight however so he could be back in for that one). And Milan are apparently looking to make Tomori's loan a permanent.

The one downside to Romagnoli is that he isn't the quickest of CBs.

Botman?

We just need someone who can play at LCB.

Although we probably need 2 CB'S anyway
