Player Heung-Min Son (손흥민)

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Although I am fond of Son and don’t want him sold, this made me laugh because it’s actually true!

I would love to keep Kane and Son both but this narrative I am hearing from Spurs fans, here and other places on the internet, that we are screwed if we sell either one is so ridiculous.

We lost Bale, Modric, Dembele and still finished top 4. We finished top 4 before Kane and Son were here. It isn't ideal but we can survive the loss of any player and if we can't then we likely aren't going to do much with them here anyways as we will be unable to surround them with talent.

If I really had to pick one player, it would be Kane for that game. Everyone questioned Poch's decision to play him. He was obviously not ready after the long injury break.
Have you rewatched the match since it happened? It's genuinely a fascinating experience because Kane was actually one of the least worst players. What struck me most on a calm, dispassionate review was how almost everyone was failing to make simple six yard passes. Kane was one of the few players doing them right. I think the hyperfocus on Kane before and during the game allowed worse performances elsewhere to slide unnoticed to a large degree.

The format was notably similar to the LC final, which led me to blame nerves and mentality as the most obvious shared factor. Again, in the LC final, Kane was one of the players who didn't totally forget how to do the basics.

Van Dijk had Kane for breakfast in that European Cup Final.

I'm not saying he was good by any stretch, mate. He was bad. I'm just questioning the idea that he was solely or even mostly to blame for the loss in a match where there were many players even worse than an unfit, out-of-practice Kane. I seem to recall that Eriksen was particularly awful relative to his own standards.

I can't help feeling that most of the team completely lost it with nerves in both the CL and LC finals, despite it not being exactly the same players. I largely reject the hypothesis that the players simply didn't try or weren't interested in the League Cup (I think the full-time reaction puts the lie to that): to me, it looked like they were paralysed by fear. Kane, to his credit, has never been in a match where I felt he was phased by the occasion, though he did have his own extenuating circumstances in those two matches. Very unlucky for him and Spurs really. The probability of him being injured for those two matches specifically was pretty low.

When hindsight bias is put aside, I still totally defend Poch's gamble on Kane in the CL (and the LC). When you look at how bad the team as a whole was in that match, the only way they were winning was if the gamble paid off and Kane had one of his all-time great performances. On a different forum, I made a bullet-pointed list of reasons I thought it was the right bet but this Isn't the thread for that. :p

The counterarguments would be that we made it through Dortmund, a daunting City team as well as Ajax without Kane. Kane's mere presence could have impacted the team's tactics and team's chemistry in unknown ways. My view is that we should have stuck to what got us to the final.

But... everything is clear in hindsight. Who knows how it would have played out. To your point, almost everyone looked like they were not up for it exception being Son and maybe Rose/Winks. I also thought Eriksen had a decent game. Kane was just non existent.

Eriksen had been poor in the quarters, semis and final to be honest but that seems to be forgotten.

Agree with the Kane bit but Eriksen was poor

He didn't really put a foot wrong tonight. Got a great goal and a great assist.. but was unlucky to not have another goal (ruled offside by VAR) and assist tonight. (That cross to Kane which was also slightly offside and Kane should have done better). Also had a nice attempt on goal that was saved..

Hopefully he can continue this form..

He was quality today. The sharpness was there the confidence was there you could tell as soon as he had that first shot he was on it today. Typical son goal that was well deserved after the bollocks decision that was his first disallowed goal.

He's had so many goals "robbed" from him so doubly pleased his last goal stood.
21 goals and 17 assists this season.
Amazing player and I hope he signs for life.
