Blame FIFA./UEFA for imposing a ridiculous international timetable on everyone which drops players back to clubs only a week before PL starts without a pre-season
 
This stuff about Atalanta suddenly raising the price smacks of Levy taking the piss one too many times. I suspect, given all the noise about 'advanced talks' earlier, that we had agreed a 'landing zone' on price but then Levy tried to structure the payments in such a painful way that they finally lost patience.

And yes, you are correct that if he's a VvD or a Dias no one will give a shit if we paid 50 or 60 for him. But if he's shit, a whole lot of people will be moaning we spent 45 million for a dud and we should have gotten Player X instead for 30, who turned out to be a star.

I think he has the potential to be a similar impact on our defense. I doubt he will be at that level but very likely to have a major impact unlike the other players we are linked to.

If Spurs don’t think that they shouldn’t be willing to spend 45m on him.

You don’t spend 45m on guys you think are ok. There are no players that come with 100% guarantees.

We clearly have the money we are just trying to low ball or save money for other stuff etc.

I was just talking theoretical, mate. But even if you want to take it literally, between Dier & Sanchez and Romero there are a number of CBs that we could go after. Kounde was one of them, but we couldn't agree terms with the player. There may even be others that are in the works that we have no clue of (and if the rumors about Paratici having 10 targets for each position are true, there probably are). It's not like this hasn't happened before. Let's just wait and see what happens, eh? Even if we had signed Romero last week, he wouldn't have reported in until next week anyhow, so stop the melting.
