I've watched the first one a few times. Have to give credit to Wilson for the movement, it was very, very clever to hide behind Romero and then get around him in the time it took the cross to come in. Dier was still marking no one though. He was, as he often is, stranded in no mans land and not really adding to anything.
As for the 2nd, whether Romero missed it or not isn't important when Dier tried to head the ball, failed, fell over and kneed it into the goal like a complete pleb,
It was well played by Wilson and well worked by Newcastle down our left. But Romero, who looks behind him before the ball is crossed, so he knows that he's there, should challenge for that though he was on his heels (but glad you've rewatched it and now can clearly see it's not on Dier as you claimed). There is NOTHING wrong with Dier positioning for the first, there isn't anyone to mark, he's exactly where he should be (Skipp is the player out of position, left Reggie with a 2v1 or maybe could be argued that Son should have been out wide to help, while Skipp's role would have stayed narrow, I don't know what their specific instructions are here. Romero is positioned where he should be as is Emerson, all be it he is in a 2v1 situation against him at the back post, which is quite usual to see. ALL the back 4 are positioned well, including Reggie who's needed support from Skipp/Son).

As for the 2nd - Of course it's important that Romero missed his header, it's no different to a 'Keeper claiming a cross and missing it and a goal results. It looks a mess, so always looks bad on whoever the ball comes off, but taking charge in the box is the responsibility of the player that demands/challenges for it, it changes that defensive dynamic in that moment. If that was Lloris claiming that cross and not making it then it would be his fault, not the player the ball comes off as he has little to no time to react.

But I'm not even on my high horse about Romero's poor performance in the first half (loads of missed timed tackles, got beat clean for their goal) because he brings a dynamic to our game that I think we need and have lacked for ages now (front foot and aggressive) he's young (especially for a CB) so will make mistakes every game (Just as he has done multiple times in every game he's played for us) but the balance of the team has improved.

But make no mistake that playing alongside him means whoever that is, is going to be left isolated when he misses his tackle/gets rolled/calls for a ball and doesn't make it and they are left mopping up after him, and that's been Dier. So next time we concede, just hold your horses before you point a finger, take the move back and see where it stems from (as per the Villa goal before the international break, as right now Romero for all the aggression he brings he's been the route cause or instrumental in the build-up to the oppo goal).

It will take time for a partnership to form but our best two CB's are the ones selected by Nuno yesterday.

Is it just me, or did we shift between our more traditional 4-2-3-1 and a 4-2-2-2 during the game?

Nuno's 4-2-3-1 seems to rely on more narrow wingers than Poch's did. Son played more or less as a striker at times even.

Just some small details that I noticed going back to watch some highlights. Lucas and Tanguy played more like 10s rather than wingers when we had the ball.
To me, it looked more like a 433 at times with TND being allowed to get further forward than Skipp and Hoijberg. Son, Kane and Moura were close together and changing a bit.

Awful start, but a well worked and taken goal by the Geordies, has to be said. But we came back superbly. Let's be honest, for large parts of the game we were toying with them,it could have been a much bigger victory. Kane looked motivated, and it was good to see the rest of the team as happy he scored as he was. Let's hope he now has his head out of his arse. I have been highly critical of him since the summer, but it benefits us to have him back on form and the team playing as one.
I enjoyed the game.

Staveley used to be fit. She was a model ffs.
But she has destroyed her face. I've no idea why so many women (and some men) chose to make themselves look like something out of the uncanny valley in a sad attempt at looking young.

Just can't fathom why they look sticky outy lips, wierd noses and pulled up eyebrows. It's alien looking

that's bloody lucky. Good on him. Glad our players understood the severity. Sounds like St Johns were on the scene quickly and had their own defib.

I was snowboarding with a family in France when a friends Dad collapsed. First person on the scene was a French cardiologist on a day off. Without him my friends Dad would have been dead. Had to get a helicopter off the slopes and was put in an induced coma for several weeks.

Truly remarkable people, I was in shock after the event, you think you are fine at the time but it cuts deep. Great that our team checked on PEH, would have bought memories flooding back.

I was watching that match thinking about goal difference. If we had have been ruthless and gone for it we could have scored 5+ which would have helped massively.

Also spent a bit of that match thinking, Ali for £25m is perfect for them. Would do an ok job, they would feel like they have won the lottery and we would have shifted a player we no longer want.

They will have a couple of seasons of signings like that, gradually improving them, paying slightly over the odds.

think how lucky Fabrice Muamba was to have a specialist like a consultant cardiologist in the crowd, he was technically dead for 78 minutes.........

All the hype over Salah's goals, yet not a peep about our third. That was an absolutely sublime move, beautiful Football involving 4 players all on the same wavelength.

All 3 of our goals were gooduns, but the third was just superb
Yeah.

There's people on here saying we have shit players.

If you look at the second goal against villa and the third against Newcastle, both proper team goals with slick moves involving multiple players.

I said after villa, we have players who can play. We need to set them up in a system which allows us to do that. 4231 is the one.

Most importantly we need to have the mindset of wanting to play

I think you wrote about Romero's pros and cons well, but is Dier really our second best defender?

He makes too many errors imo, a bit like Sanchez.
What about having Rodon next to Romero?
Not this season he hasn't. And I'd argue that under the dinosaur all of our defenders were given an impossible job given how reactive he had us play. We are still a work in progress too, so games like Woolwich for example was a clusterfuck by the manager, not a specific player one (although with the exception of Skipp?? it can't be claimed any player was good).

But how we defend starts with how the front 3/4 defend and slowly but surely they look to be pressing the oppo more constantly and more aggressively and our performances are beginning to look more controlled (even if this has failed for the 90mins there might have been a solid 45mins in that), this also has a direct effect on our defence. Way too much emphasis was put on how the defence played last year when our attack didn't press and just dropped into a low or mid-block that even then stood off oppo and didn't look to engage.

I've seen every one of Rodon games, I don't get him at all. He looks completely out of his depth, just providing the last ditched blocks. On the ball, he looks so uncomposed and panicked. I've not seen a single game where I think he should be on the bench ahead of Sanchez.

EDIT: Perhaps he's (Rodon) good in the air??? Is he?
