Upgrading Winks is upgrading Winks, who is a complete liability. An upgrade on Winks can compete with Hojbjerg and possibly replace him in the starting 11, or at least rotate and add depth.

Following your suggestion, what if we replace Hojbjerg but his replacement doesn't measure up, and we're stuck with a player competing with Winks for the starting 11. Now THAT is my definition of a failed transfer.

We need to clear out the dead wood. Hojbjerg isn't a superstar for us and his time with us has been up and down, but he's not dead wood either. If you're suggesting that we keep Winks ahead of Hobjerg, then either you're Winks himself or there's no hope for you.

Ah... I think now I get where our confusion is. I'm not suggesting we sell PEH and keep Winks. I was using the word upgrade, not sell or replace.

I'm saying sell Winks, but whoever relpaces him can't be mere competition for PEH, he must be a big upgrade on PEH, so that PEH becomes the new Winks.

Playing in a 2 man midfield in a Conte side requires a lot from the CMs. PEH is just not up to the task when playing against the best teams in the league, and even Bentancur is only decent, not elite.

Then of course the WBs must be excellent at creating chances and scoring because we are sacrificing the midfield for their sake, and if they fail to deliver it completely fucks the team.

Davies may not be great, but he's still less of a priority than the others in my view.

Disagree on LCB. It's absolutely vital we sign someone that is comfortable there and ideally he is also a Davies upgrade. We need someone who can play the ball that Romero did to Kane's head for Son's goal but from the other side to really mix up our attacks.
If Davies went down we have precisely no one that can come in and be competent there.

If for some reason we could only make 3/4 signings I would sacrifice a LWB upgrade for elite RWB, CM and LCB signings.

Fair point about the lack of depth at LCB, but imo LWB is still a bigger issue because not only are Regui and Sess not very good, they're both extremely injury prone.

I don't really rate either and would like an upgrade but I think it's 4th priority because neither Reg or Sess are as bad as Emerson. Doherty was a laughing stock until a few weeks ago so that side needs surgery.
Also, odds are that one of them will be fit while the other is injured MOST of the time.

Still I don't see why we can't make 4 good signings this window. Hopefully Madrid do want to activate the clause though I'm not sure why they'd pay 40m for Reg. Maybe a loan to buy deal for Sess a newly promoted club?

Kill two birds with one stone. Holding on to Sanchez makes absolutely zero sense given his performances and lack of growth.

Same thing with Winks. He's a passenger in midfield. He's a liability even as injury cover. Replace him with someone who can push Hojbjerg, and again you're improving our depth and possibly killing two birds with one stone.

If this doesn't make sense to you then you're a simpleton.

I wonder if RB Leipzig would be interested in Sanchez/ Reguilon/ Lucas.
They have 3 players, any of whom would significantly improve our squad- Gvardiol, Angelino, Nkunku.

Agree 100%. I hate the attitude certain chairmen/directors have of only fixing part of the problem in the team each transfer window.

If there's a problem, and you have the money, fix it. Why wait and cost yourselvse points until next season.

Levy did it with Mourinho. We needed a top CB but Levy gave him Rodon. We ended up getting Romero a year later. Meanwhile, we lost 20+ points from winning positions due to our shit defence.
 
Watching this Brentford game, Eriksen would be a great signing on a free, either as cover for Kulusevski or giving us a different option in centre midfield. Still got the quality for a squad role.

Definitely. Our fans will need to belt out his song when they visit Brentford and seal the deal.

He could play in the midfield two if we are chasing a game or he could give us nice balance in a midfield 3. He could even provide cover as one of the wide forwards.

The way well play atm, I think he'd be best deployed as Kane cover.... The fact we could offer him both those minutes and cover for Kulu would make a decent pitch IMO.

Is good depth without bothering the trf kitty.

Agreed, but given our limited budget, most of which needs to go to the LCB and WB signings, Eriksen on a free is a very good idea.

It would cost a lot of money to find someone just as good and under 25.

Not necessarily. I'd love us to get Perisic in at left wing back, he'd be a huge upgrade even though he's nearing the end of his career. Eriksen would do a good job as a squad player and, on a free transfer, frees up money to spend on other areas.

Conte traditionally uses 3 midfielders but doesn’t have that here at least in terms of quality. Ideally we have 5-6 good midfielders and I don’t see us moving Hojbjerg, he is at least a good back up. We move Lo Celso, Ndombele, Winks and get two or three in IMO.

Experienced, knows the club, knows the manger, not dependent on pace....

Means we could just defer spending on that area for another year when we'd likely look to ship Lucas or more out.

Another reason why Eriksen would be a great shout.

He could be in the mix with the MFs as well as the attackers.
