Apparently he was halfway through it when Chelsea phoned.
So it was all agreed. Clubs will do the medical before the signing because they don't want to find an underlying issue after.
How do you know it was all agreed already? You were there?
I am not saying it isn't the case but I can believe - in this case, Fabrizio reported - that even when agreeing on a medical all the details between the 2 parts may not have been agreed on before a medical takes place. Medicals have to be booked in advance and maybe the 2 parts see no reason in delaying it despite of them miscalculating the time frame of finalizing the contract. But, yes, one would presume that all the important details have been agreed on before the medical.

Which scenario would you prefer...?

We sign Martinez for big money and sign a cheaper left centre half?

or

We sign Bastoni for big money and sign a cheaper forward player?

Probably far fetched but i do wonder if the outside chance of that is why we seem to dragging the Spence deal out a bit.

Who knows.... Just seems a bit wonky blowing those kind of numbers whilst there are substantial first XI upgrades still needed in certain positions.

Generally, I'm still hoping Spence is more a purchase with 'tomorrow' in mind; rather than 'today'.

+ Doherty is 30 and hasn't kicked a ball since a nasty injury.

Sol Campbell back in training.
"I'm intelligent enough, it's not like I played on a fox and dog pitch all my life. I can't believe some people, I'm one of the greatest minds in football and I'm being wasted because of a lack of experience or 'maybe he talks his mind too much'."

Sol Campbell says he is one of the greatest minds in football after being overlooked by Oxford

Sol Campbell says clubs are afraid to appoint "one of the greatest minds in football" after he was overlooked for the Oxford United job.

The former Woolwich, Tottenham and England defender held initial talks with the League One side, but they are expected to appoint Craig Bellamy, who has been coaching with Cardiff City.

Campbell insists he is "intelligent enough" to make an impact at that level and has rejected his lack of experience as being a legitimate reason not to hand him a first managerial job.

"I did go (for the Oxford job) and they didn't accept me," he told the Woolwich podcast Highbury & Heels.

"Maybe it was a lack of experience, things like that, but it's a full circle. Experience? How do I get experience? Well, I need a job to get experience.

"I don't want to go too low that it's a struggle, and I don't want to go too low that I'm under someone and thinking 'what am I doing here?' I would rather be managing a club myself.

"I'm confident and it's not like it's rocket science to run a football club, especially when you get to that level. If you're intelligent enough and a quick learner you will learn pretty soon, within two or three games, what the team needs, training-wise, to survive in that league, get better in that league, to get in the play-offs or even win the league.

"I'm intelligent enough, it's not like I played on a fox and dog pitch all my life. I can't believe some people, I'm one of the greatest minds in football and I'm being wasted because of a lack of experience or 'maybe he talks his mind too much'.

"Go to Germany, they love people who speak their minds. They got the jobs. I'm sorry that I've got a mind, but don't be scared of that. That should be something you want at your club, but obviously not."

Conte does seem to like a big guy with a physical presence up front in his teams. He signed Llorente at Juve, he used Costa as a battering ram, he brought Lukaku to Inter.........I wonder if we might go in hard for Osimhen at Napoli. He is 23, the club looked at him when he was at Lille, Conte and Paratici are fans according to Ally Gold, the player himself has said he will look at all options when he returns from his vacation. Might be one to keep an eye on

I thought he looked clumsy as hell in a couple of Europa League games I watched, but that's my entire sample size so I might be well off .. really poor on the ball in one of them too.
Yeah, look I've not watched loads of Frankfurt, but I thought he was fairly impressive. Looks v good defending and attacking set pieces. One Bundesliga game around November in particular I thought he looked great carrying the ball forward, but again, not seen enough to make a strong judgement on him.
