Putting their respective abilities to one side, there is a clear risk in pushing Lucas Moura out the door on deadline day that we piss off our Brazilian contingent.

Conte talks all the time about team spirit and cohesion, and everyone comments on Lucas' professionalism and humility in playing a squad role.

That said, Conte has had 9 months working with Lucas every day. He consistently picked him ahead of Bergwijin, but these rumours suggest he thinks James or Adama are a better fit than Lucas for his system.

True. I haven't seen any serious links to Adama for a while anyway. Seems to me the club viewed him as a RWB option for Conte to work on but now we've got far too many of those to bother with him.
This could be the case - perhaps Spence coming in basically put an end to the possibility of Traore coming, if perhaps the club saw Traore as having potential in several positions (RWB, RW) but now not needing one of those any more... ?

Swapping Lucas for Dan James would be dreadful business

Will be funny to see the usual suspects paint it as shrewd business though

I agree with your sentiment, I'm not so sure about the club's opinion of Traore though - if we really were after him in Jan, and if Paratici really is as keen as the media keep saying (I'm not sure how they'd know...), then perhaps there really has been talk of him being a first team option on the right hand side. Whatever that means these days - we have to remember, it's not just about 'first 11', we will have loads of games this season with a very weird WC break, plus more subs allowed in PL, so those players who may not have been 'first 11' choice in the 80s, but will often play some kind of part now, will be more important than ever.

(EDIT: For example I'm sure we all have a feeling Richarlison may have a huge part to play, despite not necessarily being in people's "best 11"...)

Someone like Richarlison will definitely have a huge part to play. Someone like James could have a very small part at best, I think. You're essentially only really going to get use out of him in league/FA cup matches or as a sub in the last 5-10 mins.

Unless he totally exceeds expectations. But nothing I've seen of him suggests he will. I think people are just disappointed because a big thing this season was us filling out our squad & improving the players who have smaller parts to play. This feels like a at very best sideways step.

4 years of Traore sounds like misery to me.

I'd happily see Lucas & Gil get the scant amount of minutes in question rather than saddle ourselves with anymore deadwood that we'll struggle to loan of come next summer.
Sounds a fair point. Traore has been let go by Barcelona twice.

Lucas cares about Spurs and Gil may become a decent player. Has promise. Whether he can make it at Spurs is an open question, but I think he has a chance...

But if we get him cheaply, who cares about the length of his contract.
We could just leave him out of the squad if he totally flopped.

I’d prefer Gil to Adama, but prefer Adama to James.

Think it probably did. Spence is pretty raw but we've seen how quick he is. He's that project at RWB that Adama was probably originally going to be, but one who is genuinely young & has a lot more space to be developed.

I agree on James - I'm less sure about Traore though, I think he'd get a lot of minutes against sides that were dominating us possessionally in games where Conte was uncomfortable with that (he isn't always - Forest being a great example, as they weren't creating anything and were very exposed every time we broke). Traore would give us something different, James wouldn't. For me anyway.
