Ex-Spurs Player Clément Lenglet

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Lenglet was not getting on with the current Barcelona manager or owners and was not playing much with a reputation of helping to concede a lot of 'cheap' goals, possibly the result of the team not having any DM ahead of him.

Spurs do play with a strong defensive midfield cover, and if he continues to play well as yesterday against stronger opponents, the discussion between player and Spurs, possibly after he's played here for a few months will be very simple

'we like you, and we think we have a team set up which allows you to flourish, do you want to join us versus going back to Barcelona where you seem not to be appreciated ? And by the way this is our wages structure'.

and if Barcelona don't like his 'new' contract' its easier for them to sell him than go to court (even if they think they have a strong case) so there is a deal to be done with Spurs which gets them out of the uncertainties and cost of going to court over a player they possibly don't particularly want. (And to be honest I'm not sure Barcelona have much of case)

So it could be a 'win win' for all parties

But lets not get ahead of ourselves. That's a conversation likely to be had after the first half of the season when both player and Spurs can evaluate the position.
Great post. I'm hopeful it will all work out too.

Lenglet doesn't put his body on the line like good old Benjamin Davies does. For games like City, Liverpool, NLD etc. Davies is better. Otherwise, when we need to control the play, Lenglet is the clear choice.

First start in the team and you already know this? I imagine he was trying to play rather conservative this time and help Conte build some trust in him.

I'm a Lenglet advocate, check my post history about him. However it's ridiculous to think that he's going to change his style of defending. He's the David Luiz/Bonucci/Bastoni of our side, the pure ball-playing CB who lacks a bit of defending ability compared to the other 2 CBs, but makes up for it with perfect distribution and runs.

Agree. Even Romero isn’t perfect defensively - he’s a high risk defender who adds tons going forward

It's interesting that an Italian coach places such emphasis on having ball-playing defenders at CB.

In part, it's a reflection of Conte's tactical scheme where the opportunity to pass through the lines is often eaiser for a CB than a CM.

But some of the best creative defenders of all time have been Italian. Baresi and Maldini immediately come to mind.

That first half ball to Son was absolutely sumptuous. Shame he just dribbled straight into his man and ruined it.

Lenglet definitely fitting in quite smoothly so far. Think it’s pretty clear he’s much more suited to a three at back and a lower block than the Barcelona high line.

massive upgrade on davies. nice bloke ben davies but lets be real, lenglet is a class above. him and romero have to play every game.

hopefully lenglet ends up loving it here and wants to stay.

He gave the ball away needlessly a couple of times. Looks like a good player, but I still think Davies deserves to start against city, given his own improvement and form end of last season.

Maybe I’m wrong?

Lenglet’s done ok but hasn’t overly impressed me yet.

Bit harsh on Davies as he’s been pretty consistent under Conte.
yea davies has been alright, you need more than alright tho if you wanna be an elite team.

what you waiting to see to be impressed? everytime hes played hes been class, not put a foot wrong defensively (although very easy in this setup for the defenders) and been very good on the ball. his use of the ball is levels above davies. hes already looking a cut above davies imo and hes still learning the players around him.
