Player Cristian Romero

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Just don’t think he’s been good at all this season.
Also was lucky today, if he had made more contact with Xhaka he would have been off.

If he's as good as implied then can we get a consistent run of quality performances from him so that the rest of us can get back on the hype train with you..........?
This is what has always got my goat over the last few years. These players bemoan a lack of trophies and or playing in top European competition yet consistently fail to show up in the games that secure it.

Very often vastly overrated by fan boys if only because of being Argentinian and a newish big money signing IMO.
Glad someone has said it - whilst I do think he has the raw attributes to be a very good defender, he has not justified the praise he regularly gets based on his performances this season.

Quite injury prone and had some very poor defensive moments this season and can be a real liability in terms of rash tackles and multiple cards.

Having said that he is still the best CB we have which speaks volumes about how much we need further investment in that position.

He was actively trying to get sent off yesterday.

May be our best defender but he’s terrible for this team. He’s no where near good enough to decide when he plays.

The most overrated player in our squad. And right up there when looking at the PL as a whole.

Guy is a shithouse full of all the dirty tricks, never mind if he gets sent off or concedes pens, dangerous fks...he doesn't care, hasn't got the brains to.

Injury prone. How many games has he missed, people eh?...

Gives the ball away stupidly. Gets caught out of position. Beaten in the air too often.

Really reaaaaalllly not worth the hype. Nor the 40+ mil.

When you compare him to Toby or Superjan, even Ledley....

Anyway, the silly prick can do one, I sure won't be sad to see him leave.

Romeros average rating across 14 games since 6th August is 6.16 Compared to 6.58 for the whole season 21/22.
6.16 is barely acceptable especially for our so called best CB. The ratings were collated from multiple sources both forum posters, newspapers, TV, Spurs sites and neutral sites.
My own perception is that his level has dropped and the ratings support that.

As I said, this is why I do the ratings thread.

As a comparison, Diers average rating is 6.11 so only very slightly behind Romero. But it's over 23 games played compared to Romeros 14 so much harder to maintain over more appearances. Also as a total contribution 9 more games with a similar rating could be seen as a more valuable contribution.

Another comparison....the much vilified Hojbjerg.
Played a whopping 24 games out of a possible 26 and averages 6.45. Last season 6.21 so a decent improvement so far and ever present.

Hmm the same Vertonghen that everyone called overrated during the Sherwood/AVB years, before he got paired with Toby?

Of all the players in the squad to call out, picking on Romero is just bizarre to me. He's the benchmark we should be using at when signing a new defender.

Yeah, mentioned this in the City thread.

I actively remember Vertonghen getting pelters week after week for "throwing in the towel" and actually faking an injury early on in a game against Liverpool (i think) so he could get off the pitch because he didn't want to be there. Remember body language-gate when Vertonghen was just leaning against a wall in the tunnel before a game during the AVB/Sherwood season and people wanted him gone off the back of it?

You partner Vertonghen with the likes of Kaboul, Fazio, Naughton and you have Romero in current form. Partner him with the right players and he'll win a World Cup and a Copa America within a year.

Amazes me that people think Romero is the problem in our backline, he's the only fucking player that deserves to be at a top 4 side ffs :contebored: when you have to partner fucking clowns week in week out of course your game will suffer. I mean look at the potential out-balls the guy has when Bentancurs not playing, fucking Hojbjerg who will give it back to him 10 seconds later probably stitching him up with the pass in the process? One of our Burnley level wingbacks? The guy was a mainstay in a fucking world Cup winning side for fuck sake. Surround him with good players and watch him shine.

That's right. We could partner him with Juan Foyth...who also won the WC and CA within a year. And the benefit at Spurs is that they'd have Bentancur lynchpinning it all.

It just shows, the majority of fans are dragged along by emotions and favoritism over actuuality.
