I don't think the range or frequency of Townsend's shots are a problem. Sounds a bit strange but he just needs to aim for the keeper a bit more as opposed to the top corner.

I think when a player chooses to blaze a speculative shot from 25-30 yards instead of play a team mate in to secure a better position/more reliable chance it is certainly a problem.

I dont mind someone taking the odd punt, not at all, and I do admire his confidence - but he needs to play for the team and not himself more.

It looked like we had been instructed to shoot from range, it was more noticeable when Townsend was doing it. That said, if someone is in a better position then they should be played in. I can only think of maybe 1 or 2 occasions where this happened, largely he played well.

To be honest I think if he starts hitting the target more it becomes instantly more forgivable, when he just skys one its such a waste it seems so negative.

Both of Siggys goals were the result of fluid team play and patience, I wonder how many more opportunities like that we havent taken up because Townsend has taken a silly shot?

He is young, its expected his decision making wont be great so dont think Im writing him off, its just when you watch the game you want the right choices taken more often than not and Im not convinced he is doing that at all yet.

I think Townsend has more accuracy than, say THudd had... (though only an Exocet missile has more POWER than THudd) and for that reason alone, think he'll start reaping some rewards from shooting from range... whether that's the difference between a 2-0, and a 3-0 win remains to be seen... but as long as we're winning when he tries it, I have no issue with him at least TRYING to replace Bale's Wonder goals!!

...mind you, in the 90th minute, when we're 0-1 down and he skies it into Row Z, THEN we might have a problem!

Recently (last week), Dawson was on Sky Sports Fantasy Football Show ...

They asked him who the best 2-footed player at Spurs.
He said it was Thudd ... and then he said now it is Andros Townsend!

(well, this was before everybody got to really know Eriksen, I guess)

I was going to say, I think recent purchases will put that on it's head.

Lennon might have something to say here....... :paulinhofacepalm:

Townsend having long range shots I don't mind as long as he starts hitting the target more. I think in his mind he believes he can be as good as Bale in the future and that's a great attitude and I hope he is right. But at his stage of his career Bale was not shooting as much or missing the target as much. At least not in games - I expect he was in practice and so that's where Townsend should do it. I think in previous games the level he has done it has been just about tolerable because he is developing but against Norwich it did get a bit silly I feel.

Call me old fashioned but I do think I'd be much more comfortable with him on the left which, as Troy Townsend pointed out, would naturally force him to look for the pass or cross more.

Moreover, seeing as Lennon's rarely been as effective on the left as he is on the right and from what I've been told Lamela plays on the right (albeit his 10 mins Saturday was on the left), then Townsend ought to have a better opportunity competing with Chadli and Siggy on the left by offering something different.

I think maybe his problem on Saturday was he made his decisions too early. Seemed to me the times he shot over from range, he put his head down early when there was nothing going on in front of him, then didn't look up to see possibilities before pulling the trigger.

AVB on Townsend today:

"He came very motivated to do well after his loan," added the Spurs boss. "He was jumping for an opportunity. That opportunity arose due to Lennon’s injury and he took it. Sometimes a player on the fringe of the first XI don’t do enough to break into the team, but he has taken the opportunity.

"He is very explosive in his game, through changes of pace and his dribbling ability. He is difficult to control with his change of pace. He has developed a lot in the last year, on loan at QPR and with us. Hopefully he can develop into a top player."

Dat Townsend dough.

He is our magic man.

Trust in him. He is better than Lennon and I rate lennon.I would love to see them on each wings flitting across. And that will make lamela realise.

Ooh. It's good now.
