Competition The Race for 4th

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Wolves away is the sort of game we'd go into after a good win and drop points.

Would be a good statement to go there and leave with all 3 points. Especially as Newcastle are away at City and we play before Liverpool, who have United.

Could well be 7 points clear in 4th if the results go out way. And if it really goes our way, just 2 points off 3rd.

9 from 12 will still see us close on teams above

We are a freak of a club though.

Think of our play this season and comfortably 4th at present, with 2 or 3 players who have been so off compared to their usual standard.

Bizarre.
Only thing I'd say is that we're not 'comfortably' 4th when you consider games in hand.

Though it is absolutely a weird season: Newcastle's excellent points haul aside, it's as if nobody wants that 4th spot.

Those Man U and Liverpool games in quick succession might well be key.

It’s a competitive league with lots of good sides so it’s a scramble. We lose vs Wolves for example, no need for razor blades.

Maybe.

What we need to do is win on Wednesday and then again in our next 2 games.

If we do that it's a good team that beats us to 4th and don't bet against us reeling in United.

Strangest club out there.

If we go deep in the FA and CL could we catch 3rd?

Last season we got 4th, at least in part because we were playing mainly once a week, and this meant that all the players were fresh (ideally they want 5 or more days rest between games - so playing once a week does this) and it also allows the manager to do a good deal of coaching and preparing players for particular opposition games

So going deep in both FA Cup or CL might prejudice the above as we'd play games every 3 or 4 days for a few weeks - do we have enough players to rotate the team enough to rest the players ? Might be tough on our 3 CM's in particular ?

Its not impossible ........ but imo would require manager to rotate some players to keep players fresh, and that's not been something management has been good at (except v Preston)

v Sheff U

Big Man
Rom / Dier / Lenglet
Porro / Sarr / Skipp / Perisic
Danjuma / Son / Richy

(Keep CBs for continuity. Rest Kane, PEH, Kulu, Ben & Emerson)

Thankfully that looks strong enough to get the job done.

Obv. we'll want to go strong in any remaining CL games and thankfully our upcoming EPL games probably require some of the more attacking options such as Porro, Perisic, Son & Danjuma anyway.

Meant financially (would big CL run and/or FA Cup get us 3rd, guess it depends how far the others go, so impossible to know/predict), but agree it would make 4th a real battle most likely.

Man Utd beating Barca makes it feel Europe is there for the taking this season, bar Napoli and Madrid (who trail Barca big, but are Madrid).

Getting 3rd gets a 20% share of part of CL monies, versus a 10% share of tyhat pool as Swiss Ramble shows in this table. The amount of money this represents varies depending upon how all the PL sides do in CL - in this illustration its an extra 3m, worthwhile getting but not life changing.

This slide show Spurs have probably made 64m so far from CL this season :

What we need is a good run in CL (and/or EL) for a few years to get a bigger 10 year coefficient as that is a significant factor in maximising CL revenues - easier to say than actually do.

Total prize money for CL is about 3.6 times amount of prize money in EL so getting 4th and CL hugely better than 5th and EL.

So in summary its worth beating AC to get to next round, but big prize is getting into next years CL. And in turn if we pick up most points from next 6 PL games we would probably try to go deeper in CL as we should have built up enough points in PL to be fairly confident of getting 3rd or 4th in PL and CL next season.
