It doesn't matter who is right. What matters is there is only one single opinion on the trophy not matter who the fuck it is that wins it.
That's what grinds my gears. We win it and we're embarrassing for being happy. They win it and they go on a fucking celebratory bender, and all their media mates are making sure it's a big deal.
If Newcastle had won it, mark my words, there would have been a documentary made about it.
Shouldn't buy into that, its not like there aren't United fans getting roasted about being happy about the Carabao right now, I'm sure that's happening in various forums and group chats everywhere. I still think all trophies matter, but the reason the media praise United bc the media is full of people who either grew up as United fans or came to respect the club during their dominant era, even when they were truly bad the criticism they got had a tone of disappointment almost like a parent who wants better for their fuck up kid. That's why you see stupid shit like this now they actually have a reason to praise them again:

On a lesser note this is also why there is such an anti-Tottenham bias in the media as its full of people who either quietly or openly support our rivals, or they just don't respect us bc we haven't won anything in ages. This is my personal reason for why I'm one of the fans who bangs on about us winning trophies so our club and players can actually get the respect they deserve. Too many amazing players have walked away from the club with nothing to show for it but payslips and it hurts the way they're perceived in the general masses; look at Kane's Balon D'Or finishing spot after the 20/21 season for example, some of the players he finished behind was criminal. I think Sterling was one of them, fucking shameless. You think the word 'dynasty' would even be uttered in the same sentence with 'Tottenham Hotspur' by anyone in the media? Of course not. At the end of the day the people who make up the media still have their internal biases, its what drove them to become football journos and it comes out all the time.

The reason Newcastle are still getting the love they are right now is bc neutrals love a new challenger, and bc many still see them as little old Newcastle, esp within the media, they look at them like some underdog Cinderella story. Give it a few more years. People love teams when they feel like they're non threatening but when they actually challenge for anything that's when people get defensive and the (deserved in their case) hate comes. This is why neutral fans who should've rated us when we were truly good hated us almost as much as our rival fans but they'd talk about teams like Bournemouth back then or Brighton and Brentford right now like they're 1970s Brazil reincarnated

Why does have to be one or the other? We should try to get both.

Our stadium should be hosting champions league football against the elite clubs.

We should also be competing for trophies and even winning some every so often.
Without a petro-state or a billionaire that is willing to spend it's almost impossible to win anything, which is why I'm on the camp that think that Levy should sell up. Look at how much United struggled, and they generate even more revenue than us. The only other examples are a Leicester FA Cup a Woolwich FA Cup where both clubs got extremely lucky and Liverpool.

While I get your broader point I Dont think that is 100% true, if we had our ducks in a row this season we could easily be in the hunt for the PL like the goons are.
The Petro state clubs always have the odd transitional year. City aren't exactly smashing it this season.
It's a coin toss right now who wins it.

The frustration for me is the missed opportunities to capitalise and take risks from a position of strength. There are a few that spring to mind notably under Redknapp when I thought we had the makings of a title winning side and probably would have done had we signed Suarez. Ditto under Poch when we arguably needed a larger squad and possibly this season too when a top CB would have added another 6-10 points and have us in the hunt

Modern football landscape is still the same... If not worse than ever in this respect.

You see the irony here don't you?
What irony? If we rest players and lose in a cup match that is it but rest players and lose in a league match then it is recoverable. We should be able to rest a few and get through tomorrow but we know from very painful experience that play a team of strangers and we lose. The difference in strength of a team towards the bottom of the PL and a team at the top of the Championship is not much. Next season Sheffield could be in the PL and Southampton in the Championship and look what happened a couple of weeks ago. It is the attitude of resting players that says this match does not matter.

We survived the years we did not get CL football and whilst income was down, it might have meant we bought 1 less player. Things are very different to the days when we had never qualified or needed income for the stadium.

Probably because we were mediocre those seasons while United are clearly building something and will challenge for titles in the future.
Even in the seasons where we've got to the final since (2009, 2014 and 2021) it's been treated as little more than a novelty. Despite the fact in each of those seasons, we've faced a "bigger" club than ourselves.

Make NO mistake, people wouldn't be calling this the start of a dynasty if United were sat 7th in the league with little chance of CL football next year.
Winning trophies, even the Micky Mouse cup is worthwhile, but not if that's all you do. Mourinho won the league cup and the ropey league and got derided because they finished outside the top 4 that season.
Probably also got derided because it was Mourinho, a coach who is proud of everything he's won, big or small.

The very simple irony that, in discussing the importance and priority of a trophy, you're not able to free yourself of the concern/desire for top 4.

You're not alone - in fact, I understand - but that's the dichotomy.

Yes, we can all say "I'd be happy without top 4 IF we won a trophy", but you can't gear yourself that way unless you're prepared to end up with neither and face the ramifications to our 'stature', finances and appeal in the trf market........ Then what happens after two or three years of such......?

Answer: 6,7, 8th place for a few years and you meet a rampant Man City in a couple of cup finals and semi's and lose..... All of a sudden you have a whining fanbase; bitching about being a "mid-table team", calling for managers to be sacked, hating on the players for being bottlers and so forth, Europa conference games that no-one wants to go to and decreasing revenues as a result..... And wherever that potentially spirals to next.

They're not really............ Money is sadly still (and increasingly) the bottom line in terms of competition for players, wages and trophies.

In all honesty Man U aren't a good example as they're probably the only team that CAN afford to go toe to toe in the trf market with all and sundry.......

They've just been badly managed and bought badly for nigh on a decade.

You just know that if the football gods actually smile on us for once, and we manage to win the FA Cup or better, the articles in the papers/websites will be all about how this is our first trophy in 15 years, or one FA in over 30 years, and what a poor return it is for such a supposedly big club, when even the likes of Leicester, Wigan, Portsmouth, Birmingham...etc have all won trophies since then.

Blah blah fucking blah.

:dembelefingers:

I certainly am hoping we can land the cup and no reason we can't get a top four spot as well.I think winning cups is important for us as unless we get serious investment we are unlikely to win the league and also unlikely to get the breaks we did to make the CL final again in a hurry . We have got top four several times and it didn't result in a huge improvement in our transfer dealing under Levy and that is not going to change with him in charge .So I would be happy to bag some cups until we can get to the next level as a club .

It’s going be a tough one.

Need to be strong and do a professional number on them.

Dull, bruising 1-0 win and I’d be happy.

If not, we could get rolled.
