Competition Winning a trophy - is it important?

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Club needs to go back to basics next season. It’s not like other teams didn’t finish 10th like Chelsea and Liverpool then in 1-2 seasons win something. This club thinks short term, can we make top 4, if not let’s sack the manager.

In the summer we need to properly clear out the deadwood, we need to buy and hopefully buy younger mostly. Then we need a manager and DoF with a clear attacking philosophy.

Buy the end of next season we should have real signs of development. A team playing well front to back, growing young players and a clear direction. Only then once the foundations have been built can we look for trophies.

Kane could be gone in the summer, there is no point winning the Conference League while being in a relegation fight like West Ham playing shit football. Next season the club need to treat it as a proper growth/development which we have not since since Pochettino first arrived.

We have wasted 4-5 years and that is more important than the conference league.

I don't particularly care if we don't win anything. I've said it countless times, if it's all I cared about, I would have went and supported Man Utd growing up in the 90s or have moved on to Chelsea or City over the last 15 years.

I just want the sense of Tottenham back. That pride of going into every game knowing that we actually want to win it. The fans and players feeling connected again. A coach and a squad that gets what it's like playing for this club. I would genuinely much rather see a club full of players that want to be here, flair players and a sprinkling of youth that get game time and exciting football over winning a trophy. Because if we get that nailed down, that would probably sit us in good stead and lay the foundations for a team that will eventually win something.

What I would like is for us to actually take the cups seriously though and a better mind set of these competitions. I understand cup shocks, the FA Cup for example is built on them "The Magic of the Cup" and all that but it's all far too familiar for us. Losing to the likes of Norwich, Colchester, Sheffield United, Middlesbrough etc. it shouldn't be happening.

It is of number 1 performance. Playing great football is up there but trophies are what we dream of. I think top 4 is gone now and really hope we qualify for europa but the europa conference league is still a trophy. I question those that think coming 8th than 7th and not qualifying. Even if we are in the conference next season we can use it for squad rotation like the caraboa cup and if we get far we play a strong team to win it. Its a trophy and our players will get the taste for winning.

Nah, who cares. I don't watch a competitive sport to watch my team win things.

Sport isn't about competing for glory or winners medals, belts or trophies.

Look at every sport around the world from football, to UFC, and even burger eating contests, what do they all have in common?

That's right, none of them are about winning! It's about the journey, the entertainment and hopefully watching some fatty choke on a quarter pounder.

Go Karts, Beyonce, Lady Gaga and beers that pour from the bottom? Who the hell cares about competitive sports? You know what I say? GO GO GO Totternham Hotspurs soccer FC superstars!

The European Cup was looked down on by English clubs in its infancy.
as was the Cup Winners cup.
as was the League cup.

Newcastle got bank rolled in the shearer days by Hall ,they signed anyone and everyone but won fuck all, the nearest they got was 2nd and a FA cup final yet the media ONLY ever bang on about Spurs, we have won 7 major trophies since 1980 ( none for a while but nether the less ) but they continue to media shame us on it.
How about they pick up on the teams that really have won nothing who have been money doped at least twice.

For the conference league I would rather come 8th and not be in it, it’s a joke competition set up by UEFA. We won the Audi Cup and that isn’t much cop.

CL, EL, League Cup, FA Cup, Prem are proper trophies. Conference League would burn our squad next season. This club needs a full reset playing attacking football and avoiding too many injuries via fatigue. Unless the club genuinely will play the reserves and send the assistant manager for the games I fear it will effect how we perform in other competitions.

Not disagreeing, but that was the Europe league ten years ago to most, no? Now the Europa League is a cup worth fighting for and the conference league has replaced it, elevating it's prestige.

This season's song suggests the fans actually think the Europa League is still "fucking shite.... Thursday nights...."

We should be trying to win any competition we are in. Yes the conference league does have some weak sides but all the more reason we should be able to do well. Winning it gets us in the Europa (in case we haven't managed it another way).
Try and win something, we have to start somewhere.

And I hate this attitude that we are too good or too big a club to be trying to the lesser comps. Its been said before with the Europa League and I just don't get it.

I would prefer finish 8th.
ECL is like Audi Cup. It has history of 2 seasons. I don’t care.

It's your perogative not to care; but it is NOT akin to the Audi Cup.

Was thinking about this earlier...... If WHam win the ECL this year just watch; many of our own fans who dismiss it will flip the script and use it as a stick to beat us with...... We've already had a taster of this re Roma winning it.

Spurs should want to win every single competition that they are in when the season starts, to not want to do that is something that I just cannot wrap my head around.

Not wanting to win the ECL because it "lacks history" or something like that reeks of the elitism and snobbery that we need to purge from not only the playing squad, but the entire club and fanbase.

Winning is a habit as someone else said in this thread. And you can easily start those habits by winning "lesser" trophies and adding to their history.

If we turn our noses up at the ECL, League Cup, Europa League or FA cup then we are only playing into Levy/ENIC's top four or nothing mindset.

I don't know why people ask this. How many teams win trophies playing dull football?

Besides; in doing so you've got to be prepared to play boring and NOT win stuff.

It's a reductive, increasingly annoying hypothetical....... No-ones gonna guarantee you a trophy at the beginning of the season...... You set your stall out and do whatever you think gives you the best shot at success.

I dunno ... did we build the best stadium in Europe™ and charge the highest ticket prices in Europe to be London's answer to Brighton? If not, then yes winning a trophy is important. It's important to every other club in the top six, why would we be unique in this respect?
