Yeah it's not that he's old. But this is a guy who scrapped his way up from the bench in Serie B, this has never been anyone's idea of a top prospect. But he definitely won plaudits and attention within Italy once he got his chance on loan with tiny Empoli, he's been called up to the national team.

His profile reminds me a bit of Matt Turner who emerged at a similar age.

But Woolwich did not hand the #1 shirt to Matt Turner, it was a speculative punt.
Matt who?

Must be one of very few not bothered about Raya. He's alright, just strikes me as a bog standard prem keeper. 27 so not loads of time for any improvement and quite short. 11 years ago we were signing 25 year old Hugo Lloris who'd already won about 30 French caps.
TBF, when you're used to Hugo, very few keepers seem special. Raya would be a very respectable option for us, just not captain of the French team for a decade type of player.

To be fair to us Raya for 40 million with a year left would be a ludicrous fee. If we can use that extra money we’re saving into securing someone like Maddison I’ll be perfectly fine with that.

Supposedly, this is a comparison chart to Raya for ref

This is interesting and suggests the switch to data-driven recruitment has paired these two as having similar profiles.

There is something reassuring about an Italian keeper, though. I know we had a duffer in Gollini, but Zoff, Zenga, Pagliuca, Buffon, Donnarumma, they just know how to breed keepers.

What do they know? Our resident goalkeeper experts Deuterz Deuterz Doom Funk Doom Funk and kingdawson kingdawson have determined that he's a shit GK because he's cheaper than what would have been the 4th highest transfer fee ever paid for a GK. And for one that isn't even world class, has a year left on his contract, and whose team already signed his replacement.
For someone that doesn't care about what I post , you really seem to care

If he cost £50m would it make you feel better?
not at all, we need more for this position

we could end up getting him and hes shit for a season then we have another problem on our hands, we need more then a to take a punt on a guy from empoli, fair do's taking risks as backup options but not as a first choice keeper.

he could be good but there are too many unknowns and for a position we need to get right
