Because he's not a striker and then we have to play someone else in the LW role.

Playing Son up top makes 2 positions on the pitch weaker to fill 1 hole. Just sign a striker FFS.

Did you watch the pre-season match? Solomon and Perisic are what Ange wants from the LW position.

Is that really the best use of Son's talents?

Or do you think he's better to play off the shoulder and run behind a defense?

Having 1 legit striker in the squad is stupid. It was stupid when that player was Kane. It's ignorant when that player is Richarlison.
Perhaps. But needs might require it.

If you spunk 60 million on a striker, basic economics require that you try and get something back from the deal. Son can act as his back up. We have Solomon that can cover LW and, at long last,
a genuine AM in Maddison. We’re not looking so hot on the right, and my worry is that Kulu is going to struggle.

Needs be, we can go for someone in January.

It's true. And that sucks, because I have no doubt future confidence about Richy replacing some of Kane's goals was a big part of what we hoped for when we made that transfer.

I guess my point is, I have more confidence in leaning on Son to be a goal-replacer than anyone we'd sign for any amount of money. "The guy Spurs bought to replace Kane" just seems like a 100% guarantee of doom to me. Toney, Osihmen, shit Haaland would turn into Soldado if cast in that role.

But Sonny mixing in with Richy in a setup that has a new big star attacker bombing in from the flanks? I could imagine that working.
Casting the new striker as "the man replacing Kane" is the problem - he's not. Richarlison and New Guy should rotate, compete, and share the role in a new balanced squad with attacking coming from elsewhere as well. We're not signing someone to score 30 goals, from any position. But if we can get 10+ from Richarlison, Sonny, New Guy, and 5-10 from Maddison, Kulu, Gil then we're getting there.

We have to have depth.

He doesn't have to play/start every match though. I'm not proposing we sign someone to nail Richarlison to the bench. Kane was playing more than he should have with us, we definitely dont want to be relying on the same minute-share from Richarlison. Even without Europe, we need a pair of strikers to cover the position.

I think the midfield had a lot to do with leaking that nany goals as well, but the biggest culprits were indeed the CB's.

As a team we defended poorly for much of last season.

Truth is we have never come close to replacing Verts or Toby, with Romero just about as good as either on his best day.

Verts was the leader. He could make those around him look better. Romero is a great front foot defender, like Carvalho at Chelsea, good on the ball and aggressive but he doesn’t lead the backline and Dier, Tanganga, Rodon and Sanchez are just not of the level.

Ideally we bring in two, one to lead and another to provide backup to him and Romero. A good defence will hugely help us.

My fundamental problem is I just don’t trust us to get the recruitment right. I think I’d rather see us loan someone and get through this transition period and work out what our team needs to look like.

Someone like De Ketelaere, who Milan are trying to ship out on loan. Or give Atleti 15 million and take Felix for a season.

Depth to do what

We do need it NOW, a Europe ready squad means a strong squad where we have competition for places.
We finished 8th place, we need to do better, we want to win a trophy, so we need it NOW.
You sound like Veruca Salt tbf......🤷‍♂️

Recruitment has been pretty good over the last few years to be fair.

Spot on. I hate the blinkered, simple view of ‘not a striker’ too. He’s played 9 for us, wouldn’t work in a Conte system but if we have attackers around him it might.

People judging him like he's ever played as a number 9 for us in a system like the one we saw against West Ham.

If he's played as a striker it's been in systems that we've specifically designed for Harry Kane. Whether that be under Mourinho, Nuno or Conte.

Son and Richarlison is adequate striker depth whilst we scout the next big thing over the next 12 months. Get a top left winger in and two centre backs and a central midfielder if we sell Hojbjerg and we're in a great spot.

We are indeed a massive football institution. Just a shame the owners play off that for all their non footballing enterprises.
If they showed the same determination in the transfer market as in the property market we'd certainly be going places, I feel.

'Lions led by Donkeys' is the phrase that immediately springs to mind

Excellent contribution to the transfer thread. Really good analysis of the players we are targeting and some left field options we never considered.
