seeing the players at his disposal I believe a different manager could have had even those players playing better.
More attractive and daring football? Certainly. Getting better results? I disagree. Certainly not someone like Ange.

Conte was hired to immediately bring trophies to a squad not capable of that. That contradiction resolved itself the only way it ever could have.

What was Poch's miracle, getting second with the best starting XI in the country?
Turning Dier, Dele, and Rose into Team of the Season type performers, for starters.

What I mean by Poch miracle is that he turned an also-ran in the Top Four race into a genuine, durable title contender containing several elite transfer value assets with a negative net spend.

Never happened before and will never happen again, that was a 1 of 1 in Premier League history.

Paul Mitchell had more to do with that than Poch did. He had a fucking incredible team on his hands, and the more he got involved in our transfers the more it deteriorated. He got the best out of Rose and Dembele, but it took fucking Mourinho to unlock Kane and Son, and it took Pep to turn Walker into a world class player.

Paul Mitchell bought neither Rose nor Dembele. Nor Eriksen whose career peaked under Poch.

I mean get the fuck outta here just on a general level with any disrespect for the coaching performance of Poch's first 3-4 years here.

It is true that his transfer business has been confused and self-defeating everywhere he's been. Someone said it in the other match thread I think, he's got a bad habit of over-thinking things. But that's all beside the point.

He gets the respect that he deserves, a good but clearly not elite coach. Give an elite manager that team and they get you 2-3 trophies, at least.

An elite manager would have been wanting to add to that team immediately.

This synthetic drumbeat that the club has been failed by its managers rather than the other way around is so utterly transparent.
The club hasn't been failed by the managers, Poch just was never that good, and I doubt we expected an elite manager when we hired him from Southampton. He got Levy what he wanted, consistent CL football. Mourinho was failed by the club, but is also just not that good anymore, and plays the wrong kind of football. Conte did fail the club by having a meltdown, but that's what he does at every club.

The idea that Poch performed a miracle is hilarious. He had world class talents on his hands and failed to win a trophy. It's a reverse miracle if anything.

If he was brought to bring in trophies he failed miserably - despite the limitation of the squad he had.

Losing to Sheff united the manner in which we did was an embarrassment, as was the game we lost to Forest in the EFL.

Yeah it was Sheffield United for Conte and Zagreb for Jose, the moment where the hope that they were transplanting some sort of "winning DNA" into the squad was no longer sustainable.

Both rotten, insipid performances from top to bottom, no one involved free of blame.

But five years going by before admitting that the problem was the squad is Levy's failure and Levy's failure alone.

And the squad is still nowhere near where it will need to be for Ange to justify the club's pricing and rhetoric.

We are back in a situation where we can build something for the future though, and that is a blessing.

Yeah, ENIC fucked it up, no one in their right mind would deny that.

But I'm not absolving Conte for piss poor man/squad/player management and being outsmarted tactically so often.

I know Levy is the comfort pillow many often retreat to scream into whenever shit goes bad, but we have CLEARLY been rebuilding the squad for 2.5-3 seasons now and are on a different trajectory to that when we hired Conte.

In fits and starts since Paratici arrived, we have been.

Paratici is banned from performing his former duties and we have no one leading the recruitment department besides our unqualified board as always.

Still not a humming machine by any stretch of the imagination.

Are we waiting out Don Fabio's sentence? I guess I kind of hope so?

Back to the topic because the thread has gone OFF IT.
I thought VDV had a good game but I'm not as gushy as some. Quite a lot of back passing to the keeper which Dier would get slated for. One occasion where he backed off the attacker in Dieresque fashion also.

this team on paper is very close to that team. this new back 4 can stand up to that one. vic is better than lloris. madds/biss/sar is better than dele/wanyama/ demebele...and we have much better depth than then with bentancur, gio and PEH ready and waiting. the front 3 is the only department that loses out significantly to back then. however we we dont know what veliz is going to be like? we also got solomon who looks an upgrade on lucas, gil who i think when hes back is going to take off this year, perisic who gives us a different dynamic up there... so the actual front 3 should have actual competition this year, whereas before that front 3 didnt really.
