Transfers January Transfer Thread 2024

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Lo Celso was preferred ahead of Bruno. He was hand picked by Poch.
Richarlison was bought in 2022, while we wanted Lautaro and Bastoni back in 2020 and 2021.
VDV was more preferred by Ange and Paratici than Tapsoba.
Johnson was bought in 2023, while we wanted Kvara in 2019/2020, and we all at the time thought "who the fuck is this nobody from Rubin Kazan (same as with Kim and Fenerbahce).

Can no-one in here see my point that we are inclined to get a squad only so far but then ultimately leave it short by not putting a few cherries on the cake?

This is the difference between us and big teams

They guy has played 8 games for Leipzig this season, he’s their 4th choice striker by all accounts…

Look, I really hope that he does well and he provides adequate cover when Son is away etc, but it just seems like such a pointless, classic doing the bare minimum Levy signing.

And all the people shouting from the rooftops “Ange approved him so that’s good enough for meeeeee!!!!” :angryscouser:
This is such a flawed take on signings such as this.

For almost any signing the club makes, you get the usual media mouthpiece with the “this was approved by *Manager X”
Now for people who are capable of reading between the lines, you must understand that if Levy goes, “Ange, we have naff all money to spend on an attacker, but we could do a loan deal for Timo Werner, that’s pretty much all we can do.”
So obviously Ange is going to approve signing Werner as opposed to no one at all especially considering the absentees we currently have.

We will have Werner, Son, Johnson, Solomon, Kulu, Richy, Gil, Veliz and Scarlett when everyone is fit and back off International duty, that's nine players for three positions.

Werner can play across the front three positions.

Who as immediate cover would you loan or buy, who would come to us and be prepared not to start every game?

Who would come to us with the aim of proving himself to his National manager as an option for the next European Championships?

This is the January transfer window where in the past we have not brought in a single player.

Now unplug Football Manager and let us all know?

What doesn’t make sense is being willing to pay that much more for a player that you have tried to sign AFTER not wanting to pay that much for Todibo and then Dragusin.

If they thought this guy was worth so much more why not just try to sign him first?

The answer is that most likely they want to sign Dragusin and this Bade link is a load of cobblers
They will be weighing in risk. Every investment is a risk and the riskier the investment, the lower the price. Maybe they feel Dragusin has a 40% chance of reaching a top level and Badé has a 60% chance and that extra potential is worth paying 25m extra for.

Also we will have other priorities so maybe it’s Werner (clever) + Dragusin (clever) frees up money for Gallagher (big money). But if that doesn’t work out then it’s Werner (clever) + Badé (big money) means we only spend on a CM if we can get a good fee for Hojbjerg.

Lots of moving parts and tight judgement calls being made and most of it is invisible to us.

So why wouldn’t you just go straight to signing Bade if you think he had the higher % chance of being good and you are willing to pay for him?

It’s a BS link. Probably too pressure Genoa into accepting. They know Genoa are in a financial bind and it’s a game

Will be pleased to see Werner here.

Seems like a very low risk deal (financially) with a lot of potential.

Sure, potential is useless if it isn't realised, but he's shown that in the right team he can really perform.

Looks like he'll fit Ange's system quite well, so best of luck to him.

What you’re saying is plausible but there are many plausible scenarios.

To answer your question… you’re weighing up the cost of the risk that they don’t become great. If you can buy a player with a 40% chance of becoming great for 20m then that might be better value than someone who has a 60% chance of become great at 50m. But if the 40% player becomes a 25-30m player then that might be a red line where we sink the money into the other player. These are delicate trade offs.

The other reason I already gave to you. Spend less on a CB means we can spend more on a CM but if Genoa are messing around then we give up on that plan and delay the CM until the summer and go for the easier but more expensive deal with Badé.

I have no idea if I’m right - no one does outside a very small group - but they’re all plausible.

Look, I hope he fulfils the potential he had 7 odd years ago here, but he’s been a woefully average player for years now, both at Chelsea and on his return to Leipzig, and Ange is not a miracle worker.

He was probably brought in as a real emergency cover for Son while at the Asia Cup, but considering we actually need proper reinforcements up top, it just seems like another pointless Danjuma style transfer.

January is a shit month for transfers so it was always unlikely we were going to commit to someone significant unless there was an obvious choice on the market. Keep saying that this month is a desperate or opportunist month so if you were expecting us to put big money down on a player or expected another club to part with a key player then I think you probably have to reassess and set your expectations a bit, it just generally rarely happens in Jan.

This signing has generated a whole load of noise for no reason because he's risk free, considering the only player we've been linked to is Jota I don't understand why folk are so underwhelmed, like who were you expecting to come in? It's a risk free option, better than having Gil and Solomon come off the bench and someone who cover Son better than Rich at least until he comes back - if he works out great that means we have a striker who can score in our side and can replace Rich, if not we send him back to Leipzig, win/win as far as I'm concerned.

Fair point

I'd count biss, madison, and ndombele as going all out to get clear first choice targets

The others had more expensive more recognised alternatives.

GLC > Bruno fernandes
Richarlison > lautaro martinez, dybala, nkunku etc.
VDV > tapsoba and before that bastoni...also providing a centre half 2 years too late is hardly strong backing. It's making up for self inflicted squad issues
Johnson > kvaratchelia,

It's easy to say in hindsight we'd rather have the players who have surprisingly gone on to have massive success like udogie, bentancur, kulusevski

You've also ignored the success of the other players on that list

Mate; you lost this argument about 10 pages ago. Surely you don't want to have it all over again?

You want the cherries but the cake is still in the oven, chill.

On your list most of the players you mentioned weren't bought for the managers until latter windows, we're still reshaping the squad.

That shit you want to happen is more likely to come in Summer windows, just generally better to do business, more money going around, more teams open to selling etc...

Probably. I wasn't suggesting that we intended to buy him, I was just answering the suggestion that we wouldn't pay that sort of money. We already have done, multiple times, yet the tired old "we won't pay that money" gets trotted out every time.

I'm not sure where this idea that we won't pay £20M for Dragusin comes from. The more reliable Tweeters are saying that we're just finalising the payment structure.

You know how Paratici operates, lots of smoke and mirrors.
