Manager Ange Postecoglou

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

see a lot now are coming round, defenders need to be able to defend first,
he had a week to work on how we needed to play But what has the manager & coaching team done ?
Man City can play this way as they have Top players Celtic can because they play poor teams, We don't have that
We need a plan on how to play when teams park the bus, not just stand around the penatly box trying to get though 11 players, Open out the play to pull them out, play faster,

Bottom line is, no team is ever going to win the league who give away as many chances & ship as many goals as we do. Our fullbacks spend most of the game in the opposition half so when play breaks down, we are totally exposed down either flank. Wolves 2nd goal yesterday was a prime example of this. Play broke down & they countered quickly down our right where there was a huge gap for them to exploit. There were 4 Wolves attackers against VDV & Romero. VDV has to come out wide to the ball which leaves Romero trying to cover 3 Wolves players. What makes it worse is that we nearly conceded an identical goal a few minutes later.
I think it’s pretty telling that Vicario gets rave reviews after most games as he has pulled off a few first class saves but our keeper should not be getting worked as much as he does. You know you’ve got a problem when your keeper is having to pull off the number of saves that Vicario does in a game.

71% possession.

4 shots on target.

That's the problem. We are totally ineffective in the final third and defences find it all too easy to sit back against us, knowing that we're not going to create shit.

Edit:

All that possession. 4 shots on target. Comprehensive overhaul of our attack needed in the summer if this is going to work, if not, no point even turning up next year because nothing will change.
Q: why is the heatmap not registering for wolves' right side after the centre line?
edit- sorry i must be looking at it in reversed. but, why is there red dot on the goal area?

Although they weren't inverted, Walker and Rose under Poch spent most of the game in the opposition third. This was balanced by one of the DMs (initially Dier) dropping back to make a back three. Ange obviously doesn't do this and because our defensive screen - yesterday Biss and Sarr - were also on the 18 yard line it's literally Romero and Micky against however many players the opposition counter with.

I think our start skewed a lot of people’s aims for the season

We lost our best ever player and are coming off the back of a horror season, competing for fourth was always going to be our ceiling and it’s impressive that Ange has us doing it in his first season in charge

We have a fundamental style of play we are trying to use, and it’s hard to get that across so quickly, we only need to look at how pep and Klopp struggled in their first couple of years to see that

We have a diamond in Ange, he needs a couple of years to get the squad he wants and really impress how he wants the team to play, if we give him that time and money he’ll be a legend here mark my words

However, this doesn’t make him free from criticism and yesterday was by far his worst day at spurs so far, bad subs and no plan to break down a bus park

However the whole 4 shots on target business doesn’t worry me too much, it’s incredibly hard to create chances when teams play the way Wolves did yesterday, yes the top teams still will, but we aren’t a top team yet

Our attacking stats are still ridiculous this season

In short, stop melting and trust him, if we give him our trust and have a little patience he’ll reward us

We are clearly better than last year and Ange will get plenty of time, but it has to be a concern we haven't played well in a long long time. Even the first halves against villa and west ham, I could forgive the results as you could see something really positive. I'm struggling to see anything positive post the middle of December except a few results we didn't deserve and utd away.

Conceding far too many goals to be a top side and not controlling the game enough.

Our lack of width I also find concerning. Its too easy for teams to defend the width if the penalty box without us getting in behind and cutting back dangerous balls

Yep. Yesterday it was obvious after about 10 minutes. We seem to think we are Man City when moving the ball side to side to generate width except they don’t do it at a snails pace and also have the technical ability to use it properly. We don’t have or do either.

It’s better than Conte but it feels a bit like under him where we could concede with every attack we face. There were times yesterday where the high line (which I’ve never complained about before) was absolutely unnecessary. Compounded by the lack of an organised press up top. That’s where it is different from the opening ten games. Then we had Maddison leading the press with son and Richy doing the same. Yesterday none of that happened and it’s why we struggled. As well as the inability to break them down, but that goes back to us being so passive in possession.

100%.

Look at the managers of all the top teams. All took time to get to where they are. It's called transition.

Nothing wrong that confidence and players playing better won't fix.

Top 5 was the height of realistic expectation this season.

As long as Postecoglou sees the issues it's all good.

I'm not Ange out at all. I was annoyed yesterday but not because of a one-off game, these signs have been in plain sight for weeks and arguably the whole season.

Yes, objectively it's the building phase, he's only had two windows and we are ahead of where almost all of us thought we would be. And yes, we've been hit with injuries. So have City. So have Liverpool. So have Woolwich. So have Villa. And they are all above us. Villa more irksome because their manager has only had one window and six months more than ours. The others have had untold riches and time.

However. Tactically we have both been found out AND seemingly don't know what to do. Teams just camp on their 18 yard line and we can't get through. Deki (goals notwithstanding) does little else and constantly checks back. He's slow and if he's not killing any momentum on the right is just coming centrally. Madders looks way off his early season self; like he's not actually fit. Biss is just a shadow, this is Conte Biss not Ange Biss.

And expecting Micky to clean up every punt over the top when he's facing four or five a game now is ludicrous. The worse thing is for the second Wolves goal they actually all busted their arses to get back but nobody thought to mark the goal scorer.

Things a young team but it's the same mistakes constantly. There are going to be bumps on the road and mistakes will be made, and I can deal with that. But making the same mistakes over and over and over? It's unforgivable and incredibly naive.

I don't care what the form table says, and I don't care how many wins and points we have currently. My eyes are the gauge. And if you were all honest, if results were all that mattered, you wouldn't all have kicked off when we were doing well with shit football under Jose and Conte. Disjointed by injuries perhaps and again we have a lack of depth which will only be addressed through time, but we are playing fucking shit. If you don't have the players for your system, you have to be pragmatic. And in this league you can't afford to be this naive. I want Ange to succeed, I want success for this club and for the first ten game we played some incredible stuff. We aren't even close to that right now, even with almost everyone available. What has gone wrong?

We have a naive set of players. I’ve been saying it for months. It’s where this so called data approach lets teams down or even Ange’s character phone call. It misses out the most important factor of a player, having a good footballing brain. Witness their players yesterday going down at times to kill an attack or our inability to take the ball to the corner when leading in the final moments of a game or even getting in the ear of a ref for the whole game (something we’ve missed from Kane and something we need a player like Maddison to do, also a reason why he should be the captain). Those small things help win games.

Were always going to be caught out due to the system, that's just the nature of it.

Rather than worrying about going the other way we need to focus on improving our forward play, if you sustain attacks better the more chance of you scoring heaps and putting the opposition to bed so much so you don't need to worry about the defence.

So the next step is to get in these 1v1 specialist wingers because 2 things will happen...1) They be able to beat their full back 1 on 1 and beat them for easy cut backs or 2) They will end up getting the opposition to double up on them meaning there is more space for our other players to cause damage.

So I'm not worried about the tactics, it was always going to get sussed out at some point, it's the personnel we need to upgrade on.

But we’ve spent £50m on johnson for the right wing, so we aren’t going to buy another one for that side. We have son on the left. I agree we need it but I can see the club not doing it. I’m perplexed by our attacking purchases. Even Werner on loan doesnt satisfy the criteria. Turning his loan into a purchase doesn’t help things either, it just compounds the problem.

Firstly apologies for another post.

The thing is, I left that game yesterday so depressed after watching it, I felt similar during the Brighton game. Sure, I’ve got some other stuff going on in my life that’s contributing to that and spurs are the last thing a person needs to cheer them up, but yesterday just felt like some of the bad days under Poch and Conte. I’m fearful it’s drifting that way because we have seen it all before at the club. A good start under a new manager before all the players lull back into their safety blanket of a nice training ground and comfy pillows. Ange has got his work cut out yet again. It’s why I say the job is so hard at Spurs. As a manager you’re battling so much to succeed.

Good luck with whatever life-stuff is currently ailing you, mate. 💪

Wish you all the best as a person and in your personal life mate.
Unfortunately the team are, once again drifting along with the same old problems as before.
I have said previously with other managers in charge that, I don't ever see the problem going away it's too deep rooted.
Any player that puts on a spurs shirt, seems to have or inherit a weak mentality, the drive and will to win isn't there, certainly not on a consistent basis.
I don't know what the answer is, I used to think bringing in a winning mentality, would drive that into the club, but that's failed as well.
The only awards the club wins is , making revenue and high ticket prices.

Try and remember to keep things in perspective mate. Concentrate on what you can control and Spurs form and results should become irrelevant in your battles. All the best in dealing with these issues..

Quite simply, if Bissouma hadn't been lazy and actually tracked his man for the 2nd goal, we'd likely go on and won the game.

We are almost exclusively let down by individuals rather than tactics.

Bissouma doesn't have the workrate required for a high risk style game and he doesn't think quickly enough.

Any more performances like this and I can see the dressing you finger pointing picking up.
Correct my friend. There is such a fine line between winning and losing in this game and yesterday epitomises that. If royal had got to Neto quicker and forced him wide and didn’t let him come back on to his left to open the game up we likely go on and win as the game was taking the same pattern as Brentford and Brighton. Biss should get back as though his life depended on it but ambled back. The fact they never means there’s this inquest into the manager and his tactics. As I said fine lines.

Wow! .Is that what he said????. .(I haven't seen his post match)

That is really interesting. Worrying, even.
He’s no magician fair enough, but setting up with royal and benny as direct replacements for destiny and porro is Paul daniels compare to Keith barry.
He could have played vdv left wing back and brought dragusain and royal in cb alongside Romero kulu as a wing back.
If it was only for one game what had we got to lose?

A change I would like to see from Ange is a tweak to the forward line and midfield. For me, the weakest part of our team is the front players. I'd like to see Maddison pushed wide left, but only when Udogie is back. Son can play through the middle. Bentancur can come in to midfield. Wide right, ideally we buy someone in the summer, but for now I'd start Johnson, just to give balance with Maddison on the other side.

Vic
Porro Rom VdV Udogie
Sarr Bissouma
Johnson Bentancur Maddison
Son

Still doesn't solve the right wing area and you can argue for Kulusevski there. But currently, that team gets our best players on the pitch. And Maddison played there a fair bit earlier in his career iirc. Hopefully that midfield is better at winning the ball back quicker and giving us control over games.
