Manager Ange Postecoglou

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

From memory Spurs had near the highest successful dribbles into the box in the league recently.
We're dribbling into a box with 11 men in it versus dribbling into a box where one or two men are sprinting to get back and cover. The latter is where penalties happen.

If we've got Porro and Udog back for Palace, we'll see a better performance for sure. Ben is a good player, but not a sub for the dog. Royal isn't either. Bound to struggle.

Something we should pay attention to is the fact that only 1 (ONE!) penalty has been awarded for us this entire season, despite us having the lions share of possession in most matches and apparently a very attacking ethos. This is the joint lowest in the league. Liverpool, Woolwich and Chelsea have all had 7+.

Despite this low number, I don't think we necessarily should have had many penalties either. So... what does this say?

It suggests at least two things. Firstly we're not getting enough passes into the box when in possession - which is evident in games where we press high, and then play around the box waiting for an opportunity that rarely comes. Unsurprising given that most of the time we're facing 8-10 defenders in two banks of four.

It also suggests that we're not completing enough dribbles into the box. This should be a strength of Son, and Kulu (who, to be fair, has tried more recently).

Potentially it also points to a third issue - a lack of space allowing 1 v 1 on the keeper, a common source of penalties. However, in a high press this is to be expected.

For a team that is supposedly all about attacking, we really have a real issue forcing defenders into last ditch tackles.
We should have had a penalty in our last two matches but we got our shot off even if they were not on target or half hearted. Then there is the fact we have not had a player sent off against us and generally the oppostition do not get booked until the second half despite being the most fouled team in the Premier League.

But the football was the same under Poch.

Plenty of other games where we dominated the ball and did F all with it. Same as Ange, we won some and we lost some. Often late wins as well. Or even late draws sometimes.
So who do we get in next? We've tried other approaches. Hasn't worked. We've pretty much refreshed the squad - with a few incomings due in the summer. And - this is pretty important - we're not doing half badly for a new team under a new manager25 games into a campaign when there are serious threats to the top six from the likes of Villa.

What's the next step? Keep churning through managers?

I advocate we stick with Ange and see this through. If it doesn't work, then it doesn't work. Such is life. But we cannot keep this endless clown parade of sacking managers then starting from square one every season and a half.

Because those patterns of play aren’t as easy to pull off in this league. Every coach worth his salt here knows how to set the team to prepare for it. They’re nothing new here. Wolves have a team packed full of internationals who know how to set a counter and how to cut out passing options much better than Kilmarnock. There’s a reason his record in the CL fell off.

The man has a great personality, is a natural leader and wants to play the sort of stuff we like. But he’s not unique or special in this league, it’s seen all these tactics before. The level of coaching at the level he’s managed at before is several tiers lower.
I got slated for suggesting this.

Maddison vs Sheff Utd
Gil vs Aston Villa
Kulusevski vs Brighton
Son vs Nottm Forest
Van de Ven vs Everton
Romero vs Man Utd
Handball vs West Ham

I seem to remember Udogie being fouled in the box by someone too that should have been given, just couldn't remember the team it was against.

Any others missing?

Disappointing to lose on Saturday, Wolves seem to be our bogey side at the moment.

We've just won our last 5 matches at home on the bounce and reading some of the comments on this thread honestly make me wonder if some fans actually know how to support a football team anymore. It's either modern fan syndrome living in a want want want world or giving up at the first opportunity.

I'm abit baffled as to what fans expectations for this season are. Beginning of the season most fans just wanted to see a change in the mentality at the club, more positive football, more likeable players and just a general better atmosphere. I feel like we have got that, however looking at the state of some of these comments where fans feel like giving up after one home defeat in however many really makes me wonder where we are at as a club at times.

Ange isn't the only new person in this club, we have pretty much a completely new starting 11. It's not gonna happen in 6 months, anyone that thinks that is only fooling themselves.

We had an unbelievable start to the season, probably the worse thing that could have happened in hindsight because fans just went completely over the top. Now we've come back down to earth fans are already talking about 'Ange out'. It's a bonkers mentality.

Kept out since the game, and will be keeping out a while longer whilst the usual melters (a small minority but a bunch of boring buggers) wet their pants.

All I will say is this:

There is no footballing managerial messiah. Every manager makes mistakes.

It is perfectly acceptable to constructively criticise Ange, as long as one is prepared to offer constructive praise where appropriate.

It is NOT acceptable to call for his head or start thinking about his sacking. Anyone who does that is a prick as far as I'm concerned and are definitely NOT spurs supporters.

Some of you lot need to stop thinking in black and white for fuck sake.

That is all. Back to off topic I go - carry on, scrappers.

Postecoglou is the same manager today he was not that long ago when people were wildly enthusiastic about him. I'm not a fan of his and wish we'd gotten someone else, but credit where it is due he's marked off several positives from the list that needed doing. The team is playing a style fans wanted, he's gotten younger guys into the lineup, there is still a chance at top four, and he's working with the front office team toward getting in players who fit his system. Maybe he works out, maybe he doesn't, but as dull as things seem lately I don't think you can predict the future from a handful of recent games. As for his system, it's a risk, but I do think he'll learn from how teams are countering and make adjustments. The system itself he'll stick to, but he's a smart guy and he'll figure out how to make adjustments on the practice pitch and make improvements. The only way he isn't here three years is if he loses the team and/or goes to war with the media and the front office.

Yeah I'm not convinced. The losses have been to West Ham, Wolves and Villa (plus that debacle we won't speak of). These are not top tier EPL let alone Champions League quality teams or managers.

I watched Celtic in Europe and the finishing was the difference. The style of play did what it was meant to do: create chances. They fell away because they lacked the individual quality.

He has faults (he lacks pragmatism), but overall so far he has exceeded my expectations in what has been a difficult season.

They are all good PL sides. With some really good players. The point is that you play those teams every week in this league and its a scrap, the pretty football becomes a grind. This is even true for a team like City, they are just 100x better at establishing control and game management.

Ange has definitely exceeded expectations, he’s doing a good job. But we’ve creaked for a bit now. I don’t think he needs to go defensive or drop the line back but long term we need to get a lot better at knowing when to assert control and have 10-15 taking the sting out of a team rather than just constantly trying to score.

Some people just do not have the stomach for supporting a sports team.

losing games and playing poorly doesn't make you a bad manager, especially at the beginning of your tenure at a new club.

The truth is, like every other club, including the ones people wish we were like, you have to strap in for the ride.

Ange brings the kind of football all of us were crying out for. If you want it, you have to give it longer than 6 months just like it took Klopp, Guardiola, Arteta, whoever.
Needed that, as I had a little wobble after Saturday, with all the other results being rubbish, too.
It's a matter of keeping perspective, which is difficult at times, especially when the media are doing their level best to stir the pot as well.
