He doesn't say that thoughI genuinely don't see the logic in him saying improving set pieces won't improve us
Recruitment IS and has been our biggest issue. ENIC doesn't see it this way because they back some of the dumb-fuck recruitment decisions of managers, e.g. Perisic. We had a brief good moment with Mitchell and recently Paratici did some good business. Paratici being kept on in a consultancy role really shows how bad we are in this department though. When we had Mitchell here we had FSG at Liverpool scooping up Spurs targets and Southampton players. Look what they've done since then? Most clubs are now doing what Mitchell did well, some like FSG have evolved, even more. I think we're about 10-15 years behind in this area in terms of skills and soft skills. So much wasted money on poor recruitment. Any coach or manager effectively has their hands tied behind their back and ENIC feel that allowing managers a few players here and there that they want is a good trade-off. Think about Conte... He wanted Perisic. The club wanted Spence. Both piss poor recruitment decisions. We're clueless here. And the happy clappers / pwoppa fans find excuses and lap it up. Every. Single. Time
We understand the relativity point. It 's a valid point, but isn't a clincher however. Celtic were incredibly strong in all aspects vs their opponents (ex Rangers).Agree with you 99%, except for :
I agree that EPL is one of the top competitions, but what everyone seems to be missing is that it is all RELATIVE.
If you are coaching in one of these lesser Leagues, then compared to EPL, you have worse players, less money etc.
BUT, all the other teams in that league are in the same boat.
So if you can devise how to win in THAT LEAGUE, then you're a good coach.
In his second year, Ange has won titles at South Melbourne, Brisbane, Yokohama and Celtic.
Who's to say he won't do the same here?
Relativity
He's trying to control the narrative and calm the media hysteria regarding pur defending our set pieces but for once he's misread the room regarding how fans feel about the situation and now he's coming across as being disengenuous

The PL is relentless in finding weaknesses. Every week you're playing teams full of internationals.
Good postIt's a really good point.
But if you look at Ange's response in the post-Arse presser and it's pretty clear - getting the overall system right is higher priority than fixing set pieces. Ange plays the long game rather than the quick fix. All of his interviews and pressers are consistent with this theme.
As a long-game player, the long goal is to win the Prem. But I think the FA cup loss to Citeh, where we were well and truly outplayed, was where Ange realised that we weren't going to get close this season, and his priorities shifted.
Everything that has happened since then, including him resisting getting drawn into the "race for 4th" narrative, is consistent with being focused almost solely on the long term goal. That probably includes working the guys harder in training than he would if he wanted them fresh for the matches on the weekend.
As long as we finish 5th or 6th this season to get some sort of European football next season, and we have a half decent transfer window, things are set up well to start challenging the top 3.
There's no doubt that Ange is facing the challenge of his career. This is a tougher comp than Scotland, Japan, Australia and even arguably the World Cup. But he's a smart guy, a good man manager, and (for most of us anyway) quite likeable. He will relish the challenge. That doesn't mean he will succeed. But I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out.
Agreed. But it's what you can get away with. Not convinced the Ange "we'll cop it" crap has helped us at all this season.
Perisic was good recruitment. He would have been very useful this season. We actually need more players in their early 30s who consistently deliver, are technically very good, and have street smartsRecruitment IS and has been our biggest issue. He's 35 and other than a few good shifts really struggled with the prem. That's why he's not here. Doesn't have the legs or the quickness anymore.Perisic was good recruitment. Not entirely sure why he would of said this, as he's making his own bed with this one. As we all know we've been totally devoid of any signs of progression as a team for the past 15 games or so. Just over half of those games we've been relegation fodder level.quite interesting that he's outright said he expects to be in a title race this time next year. I'm trying to remember if any of our recent previous managers outright said similar. I know Conte literally laughed it off and said no.
Poch and mourinho i feel danced around it with riddles.
Coming out and saying it public must put a little pressure on the club to bring in the calbre of players to be in the mix for the title this time in 12 months.
Timo Werner made permanent, and some more cheeky frees/final year deals wont cut it.
If Jedinak is in charge of coaching defensive set pieces he’s probably just protecting him rather than throwing him under the bus. It’s the type of thing Ange has done when the media have called out a player’s individual error.Hope it's all for the media because I actually like him as a manager

I can’t imagine that’s really what he’s thinking behind closed doors and I expect they’ll look to address it one way or another over the coming months.
From The Athletics recent podcast they also highlighted the reduction in set piece errors at Celtic going from season 1 to season 2 as the system bedded in.
buying johnson for 50m when your system is designed to pin a side in- illogicalAnyone reading that quote as we don’t need to improve at set pieces shows that people are either stupid or have an agenda to have a go at the manager.

He probably thought they’d drop it, but clearly they haven’t and he can’t exactly back track now. That is exactly what he’s doing.
He could still say that it’s a priority and not throw him under the bus.
