Interesting list. But how many are realistic? To me our problems elsewhere in the squad are so big we should be looking at keeping Son as our primary LW for now and purchasing a long term successor who we can ease in.

Sancho would interest me if he'd accept lower wages. I'd need to see more footage of CHO but he's had a great season and it's not unheard of for wingers to grow into their potential at 23. Mitoma would be the dream. The rest are non starters (Musiala, Gordon, Williams), or not good enough (Pulisic).

Eze is a good player but it's too much money for someone who probably wouldn't displace Son at LW nor Maddison at #10. And playing him at #8 would leave us very light defensively in midfield. That amount of money we need to be spending on guaranteed starters not rotation.

Darwin (LF) (if Liverpool want to cash out - I'd take a punt)

Toney and Guirassy the ones I'd be looking at here, potentially even both. Wouldn't break the bank and instantly improves us. Frees up cash for elsewhere, especially if we can flog Richy to the Saudis. Isak would be the dream but him and the rest are probably unrealistic. Gyokeres would also be on my list. Darwin I'd run a mile from.

I'd also take a hard look in pre season at the likes of Parrott, Lankshear, and Kulu false #9 as back ups.

We disagree on the need for an #8 over a #6 so I won't go there. But your #8 list is sound, I'd take Gallagher for anything under £35m so long as it doesn't fuck our budget.

Re the RW, Olise the dream purchase but he'll probably pick someone else. Raphinha would be on my list. Wouldn't touch Neto with a barge pole, Ange ball will shred his hamstrings.

Difference between us and 8th position this year was a mere 6 points
We would have already finished 8th if Vicario hadn't saved us so often, especially during the first half of the season.
Lol player does what we buy him for shocker!

You sound like that lot - 'IF rival teams had helped us, we'd have won the league!'.

We didn't finish 8th. We finished 5th.

The quality of our field players isn't really better than that from teams which finished in 7th or 8th position.
We already know Vicario is a top GK, we are trying to understand where we can improve and do better.

But that isn't true because our players finished 5th not 8th.

Unless you think we overachieved, in which case why are most of us feeling a bit deflated?

I am saying our field players overachieved because of how good Vicario was.
If this was the "Judge our season" topic, I would agree with you, and focus on the fact that, as a whole, we arrived 5th.
But, because this is the transfer market topic, I am trying to make my arguments around where we can go better.

Everyone agrees we need to improve the squad.

What I don't agree with is saying we have to improve the squad because the keeper kept us in games this season.

Could just as easily say that if he was stronger at set pieces we'd be in the Champions League so upgrade him.

You can use ifs and buts for every player, every scenario. If we won this, if player X scored that...etc

We can't use short term reactions to dictate our transfer policy.

You can't do the we would be 8th thing had one player not been outstanding and not apply the logic to anyone else, where would Chelsea be without Palmer or Utd without Bruno for example...or Newcastle Isak?

It's a foolish argument.

Just need to accept that some players will over achieve more than others, it's not exclusive to Spurs - every team will have a stand out player.

I understand your argument (and that of Billy Bob mate Billy Bob mate ), I just see the GK as a more separated role to field players.
I understand saying something like "Without Maddison ...." would be foolish, but i don't think it's unreasonable to take the goalkeeper away from the equation to judge on how the field players are performing.
Any field player is connected to each other, when it comes to the ability of a team to create play, more than the GK is connected to any other role.

Who 'saved' us more in your view Vicario this season or Kane last season?

You are using word play to make an argument.
Only a GK makes saves with his hands. GKs do not score goals. GKs very rarely make assists.
You could change Vicario with, random name, Buffon, and not so much would change.
But, take Kane away, and the whole team changes. Because field players are more connected to each other, and they all can score, make assists, tackle.

Eze for me at the moment could play any of the roles around the striker. This may be knee jerk and recency bias tbf, but he is reminding me of Grealish's final season at Villa. Except I doubt Ange would turn him in to a borefest.
Problem with Eze is he's a CAM; much better centrally, much less effective out wide and not a touchline winger as would be required in our system. He's a very good player and as a Maddison back up I like it but we're not a rich enough club to be spending £70m on rotation.

he can play on the left just as effectively as he can CAM. I do agree that Ange insisting on him going on the outside might be an issue.

Disagree. Whenever Hodgson shunted him out wide in a 442 he was much less ineffective. Doing great now in a front three but the width in Glasner's 343 is provided by the wingbacks so Eze and Olise are basically playing as #10s. Much closer to Maddisons role for us than Son's.

If we bought Eze and played him LW he'd be like Grealish at City; he'd drive us all mad with his constant cutting inside and slowing down the play, passing back, never taking on his man on the outside. Pep can make that work cos he's a genius (although even he wants to improve on Grealish now), I'm not sure Ange could.
