Goes to show how thin the market for #6's is.As an separate incident I have no problem with Villa splashing £50m on Onana ... but paying so much for a player of that quality sets a unhealthy trend.
No wonder Rennais wants €50-60, for Désiré Doué (who I think will end up at Bayern or PSG anyway)
Onana is a decent enough player, very solid defensively and positionally responsible. Big fucker who likes a tackle. But on the ball he's really quite limited. He can control it well enough and make a safe pass but a Busquets or Kroos he isn't.
The advantage of getting him would be to feel a bit more secure when we get counter attacked - he's certainly more defensively solid than Bissouma - but that would come at the cost of us being considerably worse in the build up phase.
(Not too dissimilar to when Woolwich bought Rice for the #6 only to realise he couldn't progress the ball to save his life, and eventually had to move them to the #8 in order to create anything from open play. We don't want to spend 50m on a #6 only to end up with the same problem.)
Ultimately if we're to spend such a large portion of our budget on a #6 I'd want them to be able to do more than one thing. Onana simply not worth it for me. Until we identify the next Rodri just use a double pivot featuring any two of our DMs (Bentancur, Gray, Sarr, etc)
