A lot of fans confuse his mentality with his strategy - his mentality is to win so he'll constantly make references to what he believes his end goal will be with this club even if the team is under cooked and not ready, he'll continue to spread messages of winning and challenging for the league like he has done consistently since he's been managing the club which is probably his way of getting the message across to the fans and players to always believe and manifest a winning mentality.

In reality though it's bravado, we know it, he knows it because he's said things like this:

Doesn't sound like a man who thinks we can challenge for the league does it, there's a lot of caveat's in there which is normal.

This is his strategy, he knows we aren't there yet, he knows he's taken on a project and he knows the squad still needs work but he's not going to constantly make references to it because it spreads the wrong message, Klopp and Arteta used the same strategy from day 1 when they were hired and fans thought they were crazy...that's the power of law of attraction, you manifest a winning feeling which alters your mind state into believing that one day you will win.

Anyway...this fanbase moans about lack of winning mentality throughout the club and moan at the likes of Conte who made references about us and how he's not used to fighting for 4th and how he's bigger than us, putting us down at every opportunity but when we have a manager who dares to tries to change the mentality of the club and the fanbase and actually puts pressure on the board we seemingly still have a problem with it, weird.

Very good post.

Early? Well let’s see…

2009–2012Brisbane Roar
2012–2013Melbourne Victory
2013–2017Australia
2018–2021Yokohama F. Marinos
2021–2023Celtic

Looks like he’s not stayed for longer than 3 seasons at a club. He’s already done one season at Spurs, which is 1/3 of his average span. Last season we were told the second season is where things fall into place. Yet some people would be satisfied only if we play slightly better than last season. Or some are still calling it early. Lol
Errr, maybe he moved to a better team after 3 seasons?

He took over Yokohama when they were 5th, and led them to 12th, 1st, and 9th place finishes. Very debatable whether they were in a better position when he left than when he joined.

In the years since he left they've finished 2nd, 1st, and 2nd.
People really really really are trying to paint this picture that everywhere he's been he's been a huge success. If he really was that miraculous, a team bigger than Celtic would have taken a shot on him years before they did.

It’s 2028, Tottenham the defending champions are appearing in their third European Cup final in a row, hoping for a historic 3-peat. A late contentious VAR decision awards Bayern a 95th minute penalty and the win. The usual so called fans “Told you Ange is shit!”

Who's been the coach for those last 3 seasons? Probably 2 or 3 appointments down the line from Ange. Who is now in charge of Wrexham in league 2 and smashing it.

Because it comes across as delusional, especially when we're playing poorly the pitch. It'd be like David Moyes or Oliver Glasner prattling on about top 4 challenges - to anyone outside their clubs it just sounds laughable. Aiming high is fine, but be realistic about it.

Well that bit him in the arse, didn't it? He goes on and on about top 4 not being the goal, and then when the fans decided they agree and start cheering for City because they conclude that preventing Woolwich from winning the league is more important than some poxy 4th place trophy he suddenly gets all uppity about it.

Maybe if he'd been a bit more realistic about his burning desire for top 4 the fans might have valued it slightly more as a goal?

Realistic would have been 5th.

If he came out and said "Right everyone realistically, 5th is all we can hope for", would that motivate the squad? The fans?

No professional manager would throw a game on purpose, this aside from the fact that Postecoglou's philosophy is to always take it to the opposition no matter who or what the circumstance. Naive maybe but isn't that the ethos of this club?

What would you picture would be happening in the dressing room pre-game: "Lads, we know what this means to the fans, so forget everything I've demanded all season, go easy against the best team in the world, make sure we lose".

Interesting he said one of his fears was the City could put 5 past his team, and that's playing at full effort.

Where you are from, where you have played and coached matters massively when getting an opportunity. Look at Alonso's career prior to Leverkusen- he coached Sociedad's B team to relegation from the second division. How miraculous was Alonso success to deserve a Bundesliga shot?

It doesn't matter how well you do, how much you win, how much of an impact you have in your league, there's simply no pathway for a manager (no matter how good they are) to go from Brisbane Roar to a top European team without a lot of incremental steps along the way. Thinking otherwise is naive in the extreme.

I mean he took the worst team in the league and in his second season set a record for the longest unbeaten run in all of Australian sports, and what did achievements like that mean for his European job prospects? Zero.

So I'm curious what you think a manager could do in the Australian league to garner the attention of a Lyon or an Atletico or a Schalke?

You're completely ignoring the context, which is that the previous year he got them promoted to that division for the first time since 1962. Their relegation was almost a guarantee, and it's no surprise a club of Leverkusen's size snapped him up given plenty of big clubs had been trying to sign him the previous year.

Nobody's saying this is what Ange should have said, you're arguing a strawman.

But there is a middle ground between "5th is all we can hope for" and "I'm not interested in top 4, we're in a title race" (when we're blatantly not).

Firstly, he HAS been a success everywhere he’s gone, his record speaks fr itself. You can call the leagues whatever you want but all he can do is win them.
Secondly, Yokohama is a City group side so someone, somewhere in the group that has the best team in the best league in the world, thought he went ok.

The Premier League is much tougher than those leagues though, right?

Much better tacticians in the Prem and his tactics have been found out. Surely it might take longer to conquer the prem than any of those farmers leagues.

They don’t even understand real football in Japan apparently….

After 5 managers in 5 years I'd be happy to give Ange another 2-3 years with full backing. There may be some mis-steps along the way, but we're building a talented, young squad, supported by a conveyor belt of genuine talent in our academy. The squad has a very high ceiling. There is no such thing as instant success unless you buy the very best players at the peak of their game. I can see the next 3 years as being similar to the Poch 2016-2018 years, but without the distraction of building a £1.2B stadium and not knowing where the costs are landing. This time I am sure the club will keep investing in hungry, young players that Ange thinks will make his system and team better, whilst our current players will get better as they age (Vicario, VdV, Dragusin, Sarr, Udogie, Gray, Bergvall, Johnson etc.). My glass is very much half full ;)

2 days ago you appeared to be deriding Deuterz Deuterz for suggesting Ange's tactics had been "found out" by ither teams in the league last season?

I was

But if people want to get after Ange and say he’s not good enough tactically because of where he’s coached, how can they then turn around and say anything less than winning the league in year 2 is failing?

I don’t think Ange got found out and expect us to be in the mix for trophies this year but that’s just my opinion

Found out or not. I think his tactics depend upon having a team that can and will do exactly what he tells them to. And to a much higher standard than we have seen from the players that have been available to him so far.

One can only hope that he, and the football management side are identifying and recruiting just those players.

My concern is born of the fact that our last 2 "serious" managers were both nailed on trophy winners before they came to us, and we know how they turned out.

Whatever happens I don't think we ought to be talking of binning this manager any time soon. We have been so unstable in the role since Poch was sacked that my opnion is that we need to let someone actually get their feet under the table and instill their ethos. Although saying that, I'm bloody glad we didn't let Conte or Mourinho's ethos permeate through the club. Won't mind so much with AP's mindset and style.

We definitely shouldn’t be binning the manager. I think maybe you missed the tone of my post? I’m not for sacking Ange at all, I don’t think he got found out. In fact I think it’s an absurd idea that he did or that any tactic can get found out.

All tactics need the right players and also the right players to be in the right physical condition. Especially proactive tactics like Ange. Guys like Jose and Conte have learned to win with passive tactics but even then, they need players with discipline and focus more than players with technical ability and skill.

Ange had some players with what he needed last season and then had to make do with most of them not in good shape for most of the year. He still finished above a coach like Eddie Howe who was much further along into his project and has more players in his squad to fit the tactics he wants to play.

Wouldn't waste your breath mate.

Happens every single place he's been. Will continue to happen until he wins something here.
