Micky as a backup fullback? When does he get rested and rotated?
He is first choice left centre back. And arguably the most crucial component of how we play, at least defensively. It went to shit when we lost him. Of course, suspensions for others played a part in the short term (as well as Dier/Davies/Royal as the depth) but his recovery pace bailed us out constantly.
We need a full back to cover Udogie that isn't Van de Ven. You could argue we actually need a LCB to rotate Micky because Dragusin in the Romero depth.
Didn't VdV play a few games as Udogie backup last season. Games where Dragusin covered LB. This year we have Spence that can cover Udogie. So VdV will be third choice. Do we really need to get another third choice as backup for the backup. In my world, NO, we dont.
Exactly. We only played 41 games last year, arguably the lowest of the PL teams. We suffered injuries galore, didn't have the depth (or quality in depth) to manage the November to February period, which is where a lot of our momentum was lost.
We have 48 games MINIMUM this year, 38 League, 8 Europa League, 1 League Cup and 1 FA Cup.
There are potentially 9 more EL games to the final (including a play off if we don't qualify outright), up to 6 games in the League Cup and another 6 in the FA Cup.
Whilst I hope we don't meekly limp out of the cups early this year (and don't expect to win either, although that EL is there to win) we could have 69 games this year.
Without the depth to manage 69 games, we won't get there.
At the end of the season. When we had little other option. And we're just playing 1 game a week. We have two games a week for the first half of the season. Udogie AND Davies were injured. He had little choice.
As third choice after Udogie and Spence i think is sufficient to have VdV as backup to the backup even this season when we play more games. In my opinion we have more pressing holes to fill than backup to the backup for Udogie.

Spence is Porro's back up in the squad, assuming he doesn't leave. Your backup RB as cover for LB is not the one.
I don't disagree that we have more pressing worries - we need an explosive LW and a pressing midfielder.
But LB, LCB and backup GK are also concerns.
Spence isn't a LB. He's a makeshift LB that will be exposed there in the PL, We need a proper LB to cover for Udogie,

I'd rather keep Reguilon if we ain't getting another LB this transfer window, then sort it out in January.
Reggie can't defend. Offensively I think he can do the inverted role but Ange clearly doesn't rate or fancy him for it.
Yeah sure, he doesn't seem to be in Ange's plans. I was just stating my preference that I'd prefer him there as LB cover for Udogie. over Spence.

Ok. So we really need a backup to Udogie. I get what you are saying. But i dont think Spence was that exposed yesterday against Bayern.
I think there are a lot of us who saw problems last season that don't appear to have been rectified. I'm not in the 'we're doomed!' camp, just someone who has readjusted their initial hopes to a more realistic level. But you're right, it is about fitness and getting the legs working again so fair point. Hopefully they've worked more on our defensive frailties than it seems.
