How Dry should our Powder be?

I get that the consensus is that we need a cover for Udogie. I don't think we do. But I'm ok with it.

Don't get how people want to buy extra backups like for LB when we already are near the limit/slightly over it in terms of players we can register for Europa. There won't be new signing in defence unless we get rid of Spence, Davies or someone we don't expect to leave (like Deki or Bentancur). Only exception to that is to sign KWP which i don't feel fits there. We have to be left slightly short in some areas because of lack of club trained guys.

Alfie Doughty is right there

It was last season but it wasn’t mission critical.

Let’s see what it’s like this season and hopefully not doom monger every single set piece goal.
Huge issue for me. We don’t lose that north London derby if we don’t concede those goals.

And the ease with which Bayern scored yesterday is concerning.

We play such attacking football we can’t afford to also be giving away easy goals from set pieces.

It needs fixing but so does every type of goal we conceded,

We will concede goals. Unless we want to bore teams to death like Pep and Arteta.

Ok. So we really need a backup to Udogie. I get what you are saying. But i dont think Spence was that exposed yesterday against Bayern.
Not sure I agree there, he was exposed. However, I think that was because he had Davies at LCB, and his lack of pace was what exposed Spence.

I noted that, comparatively speaking, very few of their attacks went down our right side, as they targeted our left, and I think that was purely because they targeted Davies as the weak link.

It was noticeable that that dried up a lot once VDV was at LCB. Gnabry was filling his boots in the first half, as they overloaded our left side. He had very little joy second half. I'd have loved to see how Spence did with VDV alongside him.

I don't think anyone thinks that we don't need a backup LB, it's just that some of us don't feel it's an immediate priority over a winger and another creative midfielder, as we do have personnel that can cover the LB role when required.

My own personal opinion is that another LB is 3rd on our list of priorities. Some on here disagree, and that's fine. The club may also see that differently. In the end, it's their assessment that matters, not ours. No point getting upset about a difference of opinion.

I think there are a lot of us who saw problems last season that don't appear to have been rectified. I'm not in the 'we're doomed!' camp, just someone who has readjusted their initial hopes to a more realistic level. But you're right, it is about fitness and getting the legs working again so fair point. Hopefully they've worked more on our defensive frailties than it seems.
I have a feeling that Solanke will go some way to helping with those set piece frailties, in much the same way Kane used to. Having that aerial presence can only be a positive.

What concerned me yesterday was how they were able to overload our left. Spence was man marking, yet they had 2 players free on the back post. I could have sworn that when he was bollocking them at half time, in the preceding match, he was telling them to go man for man. If that's what he's after, then someone else wasn't doing their job.

I find it ironic that Johnson is called out for "doing nothing for 85 minutes of a game," when he did a sterling job backing up Porro on the right. They targeted our left because it was the weakest flank.
