Player Djed Spence

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I thought Spence made an impact tonight, as did all of the subs. Let's hope he can get more game-time, and progress.
He had a great run down the right wing, acres of space, but Werner was too dumb or arrogant to play him through. It really bothers me that our senior players tend to do that- especially when they are so toothless in attack themselves.

I didn't want to say so, but I thought Werner was the weakest of the subs to come on, although I was expecting him to replace Son on the left, but what do I know?

Ange totally blew it with that call. Werner isn’t good enough to play RW- he’s only an outside winger in Ange’s system. You could see that in Werner’s reluctance to use his right foot to pass the ball. I honestly think he may have been incapable of playing Spence down the wing, having to use his left and having his angle cut off by the defender. Sad he can’t go over the top either but that’s Werner for you.

Ange’s unwillingness to bench Son when he is ineffective is really starting to cost us.

Spence needs more respect from the senior players- he looked really threatening making runs this preseason. There’s no reason any of our players should think they’re too good to make the pass to the correct option.

Perhaps Son goes on a run and we're all gushing over him again in a few games.....

BUT

There's a way to phase ageing players out gradually whilst still calling upon their strengths.......... Pretending players drop off in a binary-fashion is a foolish path............. However; if that is the belief you insist upon then you make sure to sell them early-ish before that 'crash' happens.

Absolutely agree- I just don’t see anything being done like that right now. It seem it’s being handled rather ineptly right now, unfortunately.

Somebody like Ancelotti doesn’t have this problem and knows how to transition players through various phases of their careers.

I think we would have won this game if he started on the left instead of Udogie.

The GOATs are masters of it; but then again they usually have a steady stream of elite players forever waiting in the wings making that transition an altogether smoother, less risky proposition.
