Absolutely spot on. Couldn’t agree more. I’ve had similar conversations with old mates when reminiscing about our match attendance as kids and teens, when we first started going on our own, without parents etc. OK, it was early 70s but nothing better than meeting up with your mates about noon, getting to the ground, in early to pick your spot on the shelf and try and pick up the words of new songs so that you could join in and become word perfect. Then sing your heart out and out sing the opposition.

For me anyway as we got a bit older, it laid the foundation for — as you describe — simply bowling up to games, meeting up with mates, getting involved with the chanting, few beers etc and the whole social side of the day, not just the game. Better days in my opinion.
A bit o.t but we're you there when Millwall turned up in the shelf for the 3-3?

I certainly was. Can’t say I got close to any of the action though but remember being aware of it. If memory serves I remember seeing the old bill making a bee line towards it then suddenly slowing down as they got close.

I was also at the away game at The Den the previous Boxing Day. That was fun. Didn’t see much on the way in, other than some “Spurs fans prepare to die” graffiti around New Cross Stn. Bit different afterwards with running battles near the station and plenty of bottles flying around.

One thing was for sure, there certainly weren’t any half and half scarves around that day.

I mentioned in the Retro thread that supporters today just don't experience away games like we did back in the 80s. We used to take huge numbers at every game because we were able to. I don’t even bother to apply for away games anymore.

We used average something ridiculous like 10k away in the season we went down and the following season after promotion.

Absolutely brilliant days. Never to be repeated.

Just been chatting to a mate of over 50 years. He was telling me that someone complained to the club about him swearing at the Woolwich game. Probably put them off their popcorn :roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:
There was a bloke sat a few rows in front of us at the west ham game, who was giving all the west ham players serious abuse for the first 20 mins or so of the game.

Nobody seemed to mind though, untill the 'orange stewards' turned up and asked him to stop swearing as there had been a complaint and if he didn't calm down they'd eject him.

He told them to fuck themselves and... was quickly ejected! 🤣

It has come to something when you are getting grassed for swearing at home to West Ham and Woolwich.

If the grasses were around in the 70s, 80s and 90s they would have all needed therapy.

Me and my brother were at the Boxing Day 1977 game. Mental day.

That was proper hard-core.
