There was absolutely no one within 40 yards except for a keeper way off his line.
Disgraceful that the center ref, with the help of the linesman and 4th official, could not make the clearly obvious call because they were worried it would be controversial.
So predictably, the cowards took the easy way out and let VAR make the decision. This happens all the time now; refs are not trying to make calls on their own… they only make the safe calls and let VAR fix up egregious mistakes. But so many other errors get overlooked because of the high bar for VAR.
