I don’t think Gray is a 6. He’s a box to box type for me. Up and down, pressing and harassing the opposition , turning over the ball and getting it forward quickly. Worst thing about him was he had half a season's purple patch at AZ, which was his first top-flight season, acted like cock of walk when he came in, was absolutely useless, and instantly was moaning about leaving the club when he got dropped.
The best thing about Bobby (and Davies, for example) is that he had been putting double figures in La Liga for years - had a bad start with us and just changed his game so he still added something. Never one complained or sulked about it.

I definitely see him as a 6. Watched him several times for Leeds and saw him play really well there. Press resistant on the half turn, positionally disciplined, great passing range and silky feet in tight spaces. His time learning the back 4 positions will help him as well.

But Johnson has been a terrible signing, and bad value. You don’t recruit players for one game. The notion that having a better player means we wouldn’t have won that game is nonsensical.
