I have a feeling we "did something wrong" by the extreme letter of the PL law, but it's actually pretty standard operating in general of how transfers work. Like, any club could PROBABLY throw a fit about a lot of transfers not being done perfectly -- do we really think every club has perfect agreements with other clubs before even speaking to a player or their agent? no fucking way.

Which is why the medical was booked, because normally the Forest people understand the reality of transfers. Then their owner got mad and now "EVERYONE IS FURIOUS"! Really just one guy, but he owns the team.

We're letting it play out because we know there's probably some technicalities that the PL would have to rule on if it went that far, but it probably won't be worth it for either side to let it get that far as no one will do business with Forest again if they continue this path.

Maybe I'm wrong and we did something egregious, but I doubt it. Transfers are never letter of the law, everyone just knows the realities normally.

I've not really followed the pages and pages of legal guesswork on here.

To me it boils down to one thing that someone on here raised early on...

Our offer of £60mil does not take the piss.

Unless we did the whole wanky £60,000,001 thing, it's a reasonable starting offer.

Not our fault if that happens to be the clause.

:levyhands:

That's the thing, the absolute most money Forest stand to gain now by selling MGW is to Spurs, whether they like it or not. We are fairly likely to pay anything up to an additional £7.5m to make the complaint go away and get the deal done in a more express manner, especially if we bid £60m in earnest as a starting point for negotiation. If they go all the way with the complaint and drag us into the CAS over it we will be very unlikely to put any kind of sweetener in the deal if we are cleared, and even worst case scenario we pull out, well then everyone knows what the clause is now. You can't accuse other clubs of being privy to private contract information when Tottenham have widely publicised his release clause now by triggering it.

I just don't believe we are brazen or stupid enough to have done what some suggested, bid £60,000,001 knowing the clause specifies "greater than", if we had somehow become privy to the exact terms of the clause, we would also surely be privy to the confidentiality agreement as part of the very same clause? Even if we have in fact been in contact with the player to become notified I just don't believe a professional operator at this level of the game such as Levy has left any obvious trail to prove such an accusation.

Agreed on all of that

Legal bollox or not, the clause is public now and MGW isn’t signing a new contract

This is exactly right and there are only two possible reasons CAA Stellar weren't screaming bloody murder on every TV show in the country first thing Friday morning:

1. They've done something wrong
2. Their client doesn't want to fight this

Either way, Forest wins.
What is it with getting on TV or making public statements that will change the legality of the actions that have been taken? And how often do you hear big public statements from these agencies?

They don't give a crap. They quietly go about their business.

Not sure this is the signing that we need. He's got flair but his goal involvement (G+A) isn't that impressive.
60 m GBP is a lot of money, and despite Marinakis acting like it's a steal, I'm not sure it is.

Marinakis robbed Levy once, and I think he's about to do the same trick again.

I think this signing will be very underwhelming.

Spurs have taken it's toll on him

So say we all!

I think it would be a great signing personally but I also don't think it's going to happen :(

They should bite our hands off for 60 mil with 2 years left on his contract, especially since he won't sign an extension. Think we'd probably take 60 mil pounds (not euro) for romero.

We'd be playing into their hands moving on but I don't know, you add another 20/25 mil to that 60 we were ready to spend and you could get someone who would elevate the side

I suspect that is what his agents will be telling Forest. It will be then up to them to keep an unhappy player for 2 years and see his performances drop or just bite the bullet and do the deal. I suspect it is all dick swinging and eventually the one who hasnt seen it for a few decades will come to their senses.
