Competition Are we playing for 5th ?

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

5th place is no guarantee of CL football this season. The points gained are averaged out over all 9 teams in Europe. A couple underperform and that’s us knackered. Man Utd and Newcastle finishing bottom of their groups two seasons ago put paid to us getting in when we finished 5th. Only countries with 7 teams have ever got the extra place.

Other than City who had played in the world club cup and probably not on full throttle who have we played. 3 relegation candidates and Brighton. We struggled against Wolves not because we always do but because we showed them too much respect. Team selection and tactics were wrong and when Wolves changed formation it took Frank way too long to react and when he did it made no difference. We have to improve massively if you think we are going to get anywhere near 76 points.
2 of whom (Burnley & West Ham) we beat comfortably!

We got it wrong against Bournemouth and Wolves, and paid the price in both...

What we need to address is getting it wrong but STILL winning (like the Arse seemed to yesterday,!)
Newcastle were all over them, VAR seemed desperate to get things wrong, but STILL they managed to spunk a win!

Had that been US against Wolves (winning, rather than drawing in the last minute) they'd have said how undeserving it was, as Wolves should feel aggreived!

We’ve had Solanke, Maddison, Kulu, Muani all out. Sarr has missed the last couple also.

We’ve failed to score only once this season across all comps and we’ve kept 5 clean sheets in 8 games.

We’re doing fine
It's not just about scoring goals. We're setting up against teams that we should be beating comfortably with two holding midfielders. We are so predictable in attack. Wing overlaps and that's it. A team goes 5 at the back and we have nothing.
You don't have to have elite playmakers to make some chances. We're creating hardly anything. Wait until our hard run of games and then tell me we're doing fine.

This weekend felt like a real 'sliding doors Groundhog Day' moment (again!!)

Our result against Wolves coulda woulda shoulda been SO different...

Beating the pointless, bottom team to go 2nd was the PERFECT scenario going into the weekend....
and a task that SHOULDN'T be beneath us.... Yet, in a virtually identical situation to last season (minus the upcoming International break I think) we did the same when winless, bottom club Ipswich came to town, and we made them look like vintage 1978-1981 Ipswich under Bobby Robson !!!

Having seen Liverpool spunk a late point to lose at Palace was compounded by Arse doing the complete opposite, and doing PRECISELY what we and Liverpool SHOULD'VE done in OUR respective games....

We ALL scored late equalisers, yet only those cunts went on to win!

The table has a wrongness to it... We could and SHOULD be 2 points better off, and Liverpool could've had a 5/6 points swing on the Arse...

Bloody football sometimes!
At least it's NOT an international break this week, and there's games to right some wrongs!!

Highly unlikely that ever happens again mainly because it's near on impossible not to make it through the group stages now in all 3 UEFA comps. Between the 9 Premier League teams in Europe this season I fail to see anyone not making it out of their groups plus the Prem has favourites in the EL and the Conf League.

Solanke went 4 seasons without an injury before signing for us.

I think currently there is a malaise from the Ange period at home. Frank likes setting up on the counter and we look very dangerous in our away games. At home we seem to lack ideas because the opposition isn’t flying out against us and leaving space in behind. Missing Maddison does not help, but also this where Xavi was brought in.

It will take time
Yes, I thought solanke had not had many injuries prior to joining.
What with him and Muani , I don't think the team can get going.
Xavi will be a special player in time.

I agree- player fitness is clearly still recovering from the Ange period. We’ll be in a better position when some of these long-term injuries clear and we settle into a routine of better squad health management.

Paul Gascoigne Paul Gascoigne Can you add a poll to ask which position you think we're playing for? Would be nice to allow changes, too, so we can adjust as per the post above. I agree that at the moment we're playing for first and the players should definitely think so.

Great results for us again. CP got beat today.

Good position after everyone has played 7 games - in 3rd just one point behind Liverpool.

14 points from 7 games - 2 ppg.
- 2 points ahead of Palace in 5th place
- 3 points ahead of Chelsea in 6th place

Ahead of both Mancs too.

and all that despite not having 4 of our first team attacking players fit - Kolo M.uani . Solanke, Kulusevski and Maddison - the first 3 of which expected back within a few weeks
