Player Xavi Simons

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

He still plays like he's trying to impress a girl in the crowd he's got a crush on.

Just needs to think and play simply.

Feel his way into things more.

Then the expressive stuff will flow more easily.
Yeah looks bereft of confidence atm. The way he over-thought then lost the ball when we had a promising breakaway summed it up for me. And he did something very similar vs Villa too IIRC.

I don't think we're seeing the 'real' Xavi atm (or at least I bloody hope not). We've got to just keep playing him and hope he sparks into life.

Just needs to figure a few things out and become aclimatised with everything.

Some players take longer than others.

think he'll be fine.

Especially with Kolo now coming in and Udogie and Solanke coming back, he'll have a bit more attacking impetus to work with.

I hope so. Obviously far too early to come to any conclusions. Damsgaard was shite in his first season at Brentford then was absolutely immense once things clicked.

That said, there is that niggling worry that he simply won't step up. We've seen Nkunku, Werner and Sancho look like absolute superstars in the Bundesliga then completely flop in the PL. Wirtz is struggling and Havertz, while decent at Woolwich, has never really lived up to the wunderkind hype that he had when he was signed. There's a very genuine possibility Xavi just doesn't make the grade, unfortunately.

Still not seeing it as said in the summer and right after he joined....

But!!!!

Since we spent the money, it doesn't hurt to suggest solutions....

If I was the manager, for few weeks, I would tell him to play behind the striker. I will not give him any more instructions, I will not ask him to help anywhere in defense. Give him full freedom to play behind the striker, play around and inside the opposition box. Give him that freedom to not think to much of responsibilities and set him free until he learns the league and self-adapts to the pace, physicality, and tactics. He seems to be mature enough that he can be trusted to use that period responsibly.

Right now? He looks lost and confused and thus trying hard to impress.

Frank should have brought him with him.

Very good player.

Our legend, Sonny, joined us at 23.
He had to be persuaded to stay after the first season by Poch as he struggled a lot.
Xavi is just 22, give him some time. He is showing a little green shoots. It is the toughest league to adapt to.

Hoddle said even he took 2 months to produce his best at Monaco. That's decades ago and one of our best ever players. You can easily argue things (life) are harder and more complicated nowdays, even before recognizing the toughness of the PL.

Oh and Xavi is wearing the #7 too!
Absolutely no pressure then!

He will come good. His attitude is right I think. Likes to get stuck in even if not having great time, and was gutted to come off. He will produce, that cameo at Brighton was really nice, a glimpse of what he will bring when fully settled.

In 36th minute we have agreat counter attack situation and all he has to do is make a simple pass to kolo who's running the lane on the left side of the box... he tries to flick it to him from behind his left leg instead of just passing it a few yards simply.

Making it difficult for himself for no reason whatsoever.

He needs to get over the idea that he has to prove he has tekkers, as it's having the opposite effect.

Once he gets his head right and settles he'll be very good for us.

You can see signs of it.

I hope Frank literally tells him word for word what you have written.

I don't think 433 is the right formation for this squad.

We have strong CBs and actually Porro, Udogie and Spence can be good WBs. We don't have good wingers aside from Kudus and teams know that so they double up on him.
Depends what kind of 4-3-3 you're talking about. I think the real issue is that we don't have the striker to pull it off. If they're doubling up on Kudus that should create more opportunity for our striker but Richarlison just doesn't have the quality to operate up front on his own. If he had just a little more of something then he'd probably be a quality striker, but he's just a bit too slow to play off the back of defenders, and he's a bit too clumsy to retain possession effectively, and while he's quite tall, he's just a bit too weak to throw his weight around physically. He'd probably do best in a plain 4-4-2 lineup with a striking partner, and that's just not where the League is these days.

He is a bit like Sonny and his game fluctuates with this confidence. He just needs time and good coaching and will be a big asset for us. I don't expect him to score like Sonny did but he can def be around 10g 10a player for us.

Xavi is a versatile player - even though many fans have labelled him as a No 10.

His stats :
LW — P62 | G18 | A18
RW — P27 | G7 | A6
AM — P53 | G22 | A18
Source: Transfermarkt

Xavi is aged 22 and taking time to settle - no problem especially as we have not been able to field a striker to be Xavi's natural partner to his no 10 or LW position, Richarlison is not good enough in holding up the ball and bring others into the game at a top PL level.

Kolo Muani, and shortly Solanke, coming into Spurs side as strikers will help Xavi operate as a no 10.

Equally with either striker Xavi will be a viable option as a 10, LW or RW

In the last 20 minutes of him as a 10 and Kolo Muani being on pitch there were signs they were starting to click, lets see if that partnership works. Either way, its way too early to panic, we should be giving him most of this season to figure out where Simons best fits into Spurs.

I'm not worried about him, he'll come good.

He was starting to grow into the game second half, playing some good passes. He just needs time to get used to the league and to form relationships with other players, which is key to his game. And he was starting to do that with Muani and Kudus at Everton. At Leeds he was doing the same with Odobert and Udogie.

Damsgaard took ages to adjust to the PL. was barely a factor, if he even played at all, for his first 2 seasons. It took him 2 full years to score a goal for Brentford and to this date his total is 19 goal involvements in 95 games for Brentford.

He is good but I’d take Simons every single day of the week

Yes but you’d probably take Simons over Cole palmer, it’s you and he plays for Spurs.

The talent levels are pretty similar though.
