Maybe he thought that Amorim was going to start with Mbuembo and Amad on the right and that was his counter, just get physical against them and stop them from playing? Sometimes you gotta stop thinking about the opposition and think about what you have in your disposal...

I'd say it was exactly that, but Amorim anticipated it and mixed it up.

And yes I agree, playing at home should see more emphasis on our attack as opposed to stopping the oppositions.

Away from home it clearly works.

So Frank has to trust our attacking players more at home when the onus is on us.

Odobert picked up a knock in the Monaco game. That's why he didn't feature at all against Everton and presumably at least partially why he played such limited minutes against Chelsea.

You might be right and Frank made a shit tactical decision to not start him, but if you actually look at his minutes post-Monaco they're pretty much what you'd expect for a player being eased in having his minutes managed to prevent reinjury which has obviously been a massive issue for us - and Odobert in particular - over the past year.

For all the complaints about Frank's style/tactics and whatnot, I do think he deserves credit for the way he's managed players minutes this season and balanced them across the whole squad (well...the players he's had available at least).

All good, I guess this comes down to whether you think it's better to start players on bring them on. We can all talk about needing to manage Odobert's mins but he still played 45 mins on Saturday, the question is whether it would have been better to start him or bring him off the bench, you could argue that the subs worked but then again would have we been struggling in the first place with him on the pitch...?

He was out for yonks last season with a major hamstring injury. That probably demands careful management going forward, the same as it would be for VDV. I dare say they are assessed by the medical team in the days after a game and they may have advised him not to start Odobert.

But still came on and played 45 mins though so he was fit to play in some quarters.

Besides all this though, it's about balance and dare I say he'd been better off even starting VDV out on the left as he's a natural left footer and he will hold the width, he has the options there...

So who does he play there if he wants to rest Odobert? Richy played most of his time off the left at Everton and Tel has been pants.

Who do you trust in this team at this very moment, Tel or Richy?

There's your answer.

How is that a contradiction? Odobert was not at it at the start of the season, but his form has improved recently, so I’d expect him to be played more going forward. You’re just being contrary!

My guy, you can't use his bad form saying he's looked pretty pants as a defence for Frank not playing him then at the same time say he's been playing at a higher level recently, it's either one or the other - you can't have it both ways.

If I was being contrary I wouldn't have agreed with your assessment regarding Udogie...

He is close in sentiment to the generation of Portuguese managers inspired by Mourinho in terms of meticulous attention to detail and accompanying preparation for the opponent's strengths and weaknesses, sometimes at the expense of stifling his own team in the process. Hence the shouts of this is AVB era without Bale!!.

Sounds disingenuous to complain about this after the most recent manager and his total opposite devil-may-care attitude, but it is also possible to get too preoccupied with what is going to come to your way and overcomplicate things. Left side he picked for that United game was reactive as it gets, and it got nullified with a pretty simple counter move by Amorim.

This current approach could be more of a part of his identity as a manager than a sheer emergency measure based on some careful considerations regarding the state of the squad, but we'll see.

I’m suggesting that’s one of the reasons he’s not been seen as an automatic starter to date. I’ve said he’s played better the last couple of games and we’ll probably see him start more if his firm continues. I don’t know what you’re getting at.

I’m saying the main reason he’s probably not started him at the weekend is he’s managing his minutes having just returned from a knock and a major hamstring injury last season.

I see he's using the OK routine on you now.

He really needs some new material.

What do you reckon?

Imagine it will depend on how the team is performing and the style of play.

If 6th is where the club finishes though, and no trophy, then I dont blame some fans for being dissapointed.
Yeah well usually 6th isn't anything for the club to be jolly about but I suppose it's a position that will probably qualify for Europa League this season as England are presently top of the co-efficient table, So it could mean Champions League places for the top 5 teams, plus Villa or Forest could qualify if they win the Europa League. So 6th has a fair chance of Europa League qualification this season.

Yeah doesn't surprise me mate - Ange suits a certain type of supporter with his bullshit bluster and all or nothing style.
Unfortunately for the rest of us that managerial profile, philosophy, style whatever you wanna call it doesn't work at the top level and honestly I don't go as often as I used to anymore but I would not have been able to sit through the last year of league form.
How match going fans have dealt with everything we have been through since 2019 is beyond me tbh - they are amazing for doing it.

Frank needs patience and a season or two minimum to fix the squad and get us playing better, people thinking this can be done with any longevity within a dozen games with half a squad is beyond me.
People thinking we should give a manager two seasons and 4 transfer windows whilst the end product is dross and we can't win at home is beyond me.

Have to remember Solanke has been injured and lost kane and Son. Hes done a decent ish job so far. Saw his press conference post match. Hes a nice bloke imo.

Good question. I didn't really want him here in the first place so it would be really disingenuous of me to say no. So, firm yes as all evidence to date suggest (as I thought) he is way out of his depth.
I see. I don't want to be rude or cruel about him but sometimes in interviews he comes across like a cartoon character,

It's when he's expressing himself about something and starts saying like ''very, very, very..'' while sort of pulling a face.

I haven't seen or heard anyone else mention it though but it's a bit like he's trying to explain something about football at a kindergarten.

That is bcos he is an AVB type all coaching manual but without being brave. He keeps going on about phases and non negotiables. Doesn’t sound like a clough, paisley, pep, fergie etc. I wonder if he ever gives the lads a fergie style hair dryer treatment? I mean many ganes at HT time they needed one but we have been abject 2nd.

You can probably count on one hand the amount of coaches still doling out the hairdryer treatment on a regular basis in Europe's top leagues and it's likely the coaches so good players would crawl over broken glass to sign a contract for them. Long gone are the days of managers locking the team in the dressing room for a bollocking, you can usually tell when a managers' card is marked nowadays if they start naming individuals for public criticism or apportion any amount of blame on the players, in the manager merry-go-round culture of modern football players on big money and long deals hold all the cards. I doubt Glasner or Iraola do things any differently.
