Match The ENGLAND thread

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I knew gooners who said that Rix was as good as Hoddle!

Those fuckwits would probably claim that Odegaard is on the same level!
They were all saying that around the 1982 World Cup where Rix was a starter and Glenn was either coming off the bench or not playing at all. That was mainly because the FA morons refused to give Brian Clough the England job, he would have built the whole thing around Glenn.

I wouldn't either, but he was a bit before Hoddle's time. Hod broke through in the late 70's, Cruyff had already won 3 Balon d'Ors before Hod had a professional contract.

By the time Hoddle was in his prime, Cruyff was heading towards retirement in 1984.
I was lucky enough to see Cryuff play in the flesh, against Ipswich Town in 1977. Ipswich had a player called Roger Osbourne who was put on man to man marking duty for Cryuff, and fair play to him he marked Cryuff so well that he neutralised him. The two players swapped shirts after the match, apparently Osbourne has Cryuff's shirt in a frame.

Wasn’t it Osborne who scored against the Scum to win a cup final and immediately subbed by Robson as he was out of it?

Yup. Rix played 17 times for England, Hoddle 53, and that was in an era when "being a unit" was more important than being a talent.

That's why I worry about the way the English game seems to be going, we're heading back towards that IMO.

Yes I think so. Do you remember Kevin Beaty? He got in trouble because when he was collecting his FA Cup medal, he accepted a cigarette from a supporter and smoked it. There was a rumour that he used to smoke 20 a day.

Yes he was a good player but had a short lived career due to injuries!
