Ex-Spurs Player Brennan Johnson

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

It isn’t. The Pochettino years were miles ahead. A CL final dwarfs a EL win. I’ll never hear anything else.

It’s like comparing winning a nations league cup to winning the World Cup. I’d rather get a taste of glory at the highest possible level than win something dropping down. I’d rather finish 2nd in the prem than win the championship.

Spurs were legitimately one of the best 10 teams on the planet for 2-3 seasons; this over beating Bodo Glimt & co all day long. Cup or no cup.

I’ll take the Redknapp peak too thanks - amazing football and footballers weekly doing fun things.
Redknapp was the most fun supporting Spurs. Definitely.

But winning the EL is the peak of Spurs' last 40 years.

Had to hear on this forum for years about how all that matters is winning trophies, hearing about how Levy had failed the club and the supporters because of the trophy drought.

Now that we won something, trophies don't matter. Same as goals and results. What does matter is some mix of dribbling and running about.

Trophies do matter .. mainly the league and CL though if you’re a top 6 premier league club, the rest are just bonuses or for keeping score. Levy failed to deliver the two trophies which matter at this level - he also failed to deliver more minor silverware for too long, yes.

Literally nobody on this forum is arguing goals or results don’t matter. Dribbling and running about do massively help make goals happen though, which is why the very best teams do a lot of it. Why do you think Bayern have Olise, Diaz and Musiala, why do you think PSG have Kvara, Doue, Dembele? It wasn’t for the back post tap ins.

The reality is Brennan fulfils a very specific role and that role isn’t popular in modern football where attackers are generally dynamic and well rounded. Even Wales have rotated him out quite a bit for Thomas because he offers better delivery and 1v1 ability.

Frank rarely plays him and the only reason he does get the odd is only because he rotates. As for Halaand even when he doesn’t t touch the ball is constantly making the centre backs think and keep them occupied. He even makes full backs think because they end up playing narrower because they are always looking to cover on the outside of the centre back because halaand makes that run.
Any full back against Johnson can go for a piss and it wouldn’t make a difference.
Agreed he only gets a game when rotating. Weird when Brentford and Frank tried to sign him in three separate windows when he was at Forest. Last season, he got a goal every 180 minutes, the 94th percentile in the league. And he hit the woodwork 4 times, the 97th percentile. He’s got many weaknesses to his game, needs service to thrive and needs others to do a lot of the dirty work.

But what he is good at, what his stats clearly show, is getting into goal scoring positions and finishing the chances he is expected to. So often last season, if the ball had got through to him, he was unmarked at the back post, ready for a famous tap-in. Obviously, the ball needs to get there and he’s got to rely on a defender not clearing or a fellow attacker not getting there, but he’s in position, quite a distance away from the left back who has gone for a piss / completely lost his man. What is strange is that he lost his man so often last season, yet left backs didn’t seem to be able to stop it happening.

If we had a manager who knew how to get the ball forward effectively, he may find a player who, if played to his strengths would continue to be in the top few percent of attackers in the league, on a few of the most important metrics. Scored against Wolves, United, Fulham and Villa last season. Might have done the same this season with effective tactics. That would have been nice.

He also scored against Brentford……

His goal at home to Brentford was his best finish by a long way last season. I just can’t watch the guy anymore. I’m sick of watching someone who contributes next to nothing every time he’s on a pitch.
I spend a fortune to go to the football and I’m not accepting it anymore. Again I never went last night because I knew he’d start. That’s where I’m at with him.
I hate being like that with a player and we all have players that we really can’t take to. I can’t take to far too many of ours just now. Johnson, richy,Udogie,Spence and Sarr are all really grating on me because they offer so little. Maybe harsh on Spence because he can defend 1v1 brilliantly but on the ball he gives us nothing.

I'd imagine Frank isn't daft he will know the issue is midfield but what's he supposed to do when everyone who has a modicum of passing ability is injured.

As a betting man first January business we will do will be to sign someone in the Damsgard mold and a winger who is on the same level as Kudus for LW

Fair. I’m like that with the fucking lot of them to be honest.

Stick our entire squad in a sack, hit the stack with a baseball bat and whoever gets hit deserves it.

I just don’t think it is. Nowhere close to the Poch years.

It’s not that I don’t understand your viewpoint. Of course I do. Trophies are trophies and winning is a zero sum game. But we were fucking rank under Ange and we were a laughing stock.

Teams feared us under Poch. We tore teams apart in the first half. He didn’t win the FA cups and League Cups that he might have, but he created a team that were truly generational.

That EL win was no different to Ramos.

Absolute bollocks.

The third rate English cup is nowhere near the prestige of the Europa League. That’s just a fact. Look at the amount of money you get for each competition for a start.
The league cup is just a minor inconvenience to most fans in England until the quarter finals.

However the Europa league in no way compares to the champions league. Thats also a fact.
But the reward to win a CL place has improved the status of the EL 100%.

And yet the league cup final was the champions against fourth and the Europa league final was 15th vs 17th.

Almost like prestige isn’t always linked intrinsically to actual quality. It’s a bigger competition with better rewards because it’s a continental title with a lot of history.

The fact is that the Europa is a lot easier to win than the league cup, money or no money. Last two seasons no drop down from champ lge to Europa . Also the two extra places take 2 good sides out of the Europa. Previously Newcastle would be in it this season , also Villareal who are currently top 4 in Spain. When the 15th and 17th teams in the premier league both get to the final , that says it all.
Who were the big teams we had to get past . Bodo? Or the worst United team in 50yrs.
Continentals think it’s a big competition but it really isn’t., but then they place great importance on the Super Cup.
Only reason we are interested is because of the back door to the champ lge . Any half decent prem lge team should be capable of winning it.

Your “fact”is pure fucking chutney. The League Cup has stronger teams in it, granted. But what is always conveniently forgotten, is how you get into the competition in the first place.

How do we qualify for the League Cup? Geography. That’s it. Where our club is based. Oooooh, tough assignment, how will we manage?

How did we qualify for the Europa League? We won 20 matches the season before and finished 5th in the hardest league on the planet. Significantly tougher process than being in the correct postcode.

The Europa League, when taken as qualification through to winning, which it has to be, is much harder to win than the League Cup.
